Laser techniques for dissimilar joining of aluminum alloys to steels: A critical review

Jin Yang et al.

Summary: The use of multi-material structures is an effective solution to reduce weight and emissions in the automotive industry. However, joining aluminum alloys to steels is challenging due to their mismatched properties. Laser-based processes have been explored to overcome this issue and this review examines the recent achievements and progress in this field, evaluating factors such as joining conditions, filler materials, microstructure, and mechanical properties.

Investigation on material characteristics and fatigue crack behavior of thermite welded rail joint

Yang Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the material characteristics across the thermite welded joint and identifies various material regions. The research shows that weld defects and mismatch of strength and fatigue properties lead to fatigue cracking at the fusion line. Results suggest that the moderate material strength overmatch is detrimental for interfacial cracks propagation.

Response of ferrite, bainite, martensite, and retained austenite to a fire cycle in a fire-resistant steel

J. D. Escobar et al.

Summary: Understanding the kinetics of microstructural degradation during a fire event is crucial for optimizing fire-resistant steels. Retained austenite is found to be the most unstable phase, decomposing at temperatures as low as 180 degrees C during fire simulations. Bainite is more stable than martensite, with decomposition starting at 400 degrees C and 320 degrees C, respectively. Additionally, a methodology is presented to analyze the kinetics of secondary cementite precipitation.

A multi-scale modelling framework for anisotropy prediction in aluminium alloy sheet and its application in the optimisation of the deep-drawing process

Wencheng Liu et al.

Summary: This study proposed a crystallographic texture-based multi-scale modelling framework to predict mechanical anisotropy of textured aluminium alloy sheet. The approach directly obtained mechanical anisotropy of materials from crystal plasticity modelling without extensive directional tensile tests, and the multi-scale scheme predicted earing profiles coincide well with experimental measurements. This multi-scale modelling could be utilised to design an optimised blank shape with minimum earing for the deep-drawn component, and a convoluted cut-edge was devised accordingly.

Comparisons between beam and continuum models for modelling wheel-rail impact at a singular rail surface defect

Chen Shen et al.

Summary: This paper compares the application of beam and continuum finite element models in wheel-rail impact problems, revealing differences through time-frequency analysis and parameter evaluation. Results show performance disparities between the two models at specific frequencies, and comparison with field observations demonstrates the greater accuracy of the continuum finite element model.

Numerical study on the ratcheting performance of rail flash butt welds in heavy haul operations

Hang Su et al.

Summary: The study numerically evaluated the ratcheting performance of a new R400HT rail flash butt weld under typical heavy haul conditions. The results showed that the subzone with the lowest hardness in the softened zone has the shortest RCF initiation life among the weld region, while the parent rail provides the longest RCF initiation life. The existence of the softened zone can shorten the RCF initiation life of the parent rail and the bond line section, particularly the regions located adjacent to the softened zone.
