Analysis of bridge failures in India from 1977 to 2017

Rajeev Kumar Garg et al.

Summary: This study collected data on bridge failures in India from 1977-2017, categorizing them based on material and cause of failure. The average age of failure was found to be 34.5 years, which is much lower than the expected design life. A comparison with existing literature revealed unique failure patterns in Indian bridges. The study highlights the value of collecting data from open sources for drawing meaningful conclusions about bridge service life and infrastructure asset management.

Experimental response of a scaled dry-joint masonry arch subject to inclined support displacements

Chiara Ferrero et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of inclined support displacements on masonry arches were investigated through large-scale experiments. New conclusions were drawn about the arch response, and a method for calculating the limit displacement range was proposed.

Capacity assessment of masonry arches on moving supports in large displacements: Numerical model and experimental validation

Stefano Galassi et al.

Summary: An innovative numerical procedure is proposed to estimate the collapse mechanism and limit support movement of masonry arches in large displacements, allowing for the modeling of possible hinge change and mechanism evolution. Results show that hinge change can increase the arch's displacement capacity, which is confirmed by sensitivity analyses on circular and pointed arches.

A mechanism-based assessment framework for masonry arch bridges under scour-induced support rotation

Jofin George et al.

Summary: This study aims to quantify the structural damages in masonry arch bridges caused by scour induced rotation under climate change, sand mining, and urbanization. Critical collapse mechanisms caused by scour-induced rotation are identified using a mechanism-based framework and rigid-body kinematics analysis. The assessment scheme developed classifies bridges into subsets and uses fragility curves dependent on scouring location and bridge typology.

Simplified Performance Assessment for Single-Span Masonry Arch Bridges under Live Load

Jofin George et al.

Summary: A quantitative and rapid assessment methodology for masonry arch bridges with minimal input parameters is proposed. The mechanism-based analysis procedure is validated against experimental data and performance levels are prescribed based on geometric proportions. A generalized amplification factor and fragility curves are introduced to estimate the probability of collapse for different subsets of bridges against increasing demand parameters.
