A deterministic algorithm for nonlinear, fatigue-based structural health monitoring

Dimitrios Pavlou

Summary: This study introduces a new damage estimation algorithm that considers the loading sequence effect, has a solid physical basis, and uses multi-linear damage accumulation. It is the first time that nonlinear damage accumulation estimation in structures under an irregular loading spectrum has been carried out.

A review of fatigue damage detection and measurement techniques

Fredrik Bjorheim et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the existing techniques for fatigue damage detection and measurement, focusing on fatigue crack monitoring and fatigue damage monitoring. Parameters of these techniques are critically evaluated for choosing the suitable method for detecting fatigue crack or damage in materials or components.

Nonlinear fatigue life prediction model based on the theory of the S-N fatigue damage envelope

Fredrik Bjorheim et al.

Summary: A nonlinear model is proposed in this paper to assess the cumulative fatigue damage under multistage loading based on the theory of isodamage curves. The stress function for the fatigue life exponent is derived using the S-N curve, and no adjusting parameters are necessary in the model.

An improved life prediction model of corrosion fatigue for T-welded joint

Xiaoxuan Liao et al.

Summary: Fatigue and corrosion fatigue tests were conducted on T-welded joint specimens, revealing a significant reduction in fatigue life under corrosive environments. A corrosion fatigue life prediction model was proposed based on Continuum Damage Mechanics, showing rationality and versatility in predicting the life of different specimens.

Corrosion fatigue crack growth mechanisms in welded joints of marine steel structures

Qian Xu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the fatigue crack growth in welded joints, highlighting the varying influences of corrosion action and cyclic loading at different stages of crack propagation. It is found that cyclic loading becomes more influential in the later stages, while corrosion action primarily controls crack growth in the early stages. The results suggest that loading frequency and effective stress ratio, coupled with welding residual stress, play significant roles in determining the rate and mechanisms of crack growth in welded joints.
