Techno-economic assessment of an integrated biorefinery producing bio-oil, ethanol, and hydrogen

Temitayo Giwa et al.

Summary: The integrated, multi-product approach to biorefining has the potential to improve the economic outlook of biorefineries and biofuel production. The scenario that produces hydrogen from non-condensable gases and ethanol from biochar is the most profitable, and the profitability is influenced by product prices, capital cost, and feedstock cost.

Review of Polybed pressure swing adsorption for hydrogen purification

Mauro Luberti et al.

Summary: Hydrogen plays a crucial role in the future low-carbon energy society, and the Polybed PSA process is the most widely used purification technology worldwide for producing ultrapure hydrogen. This paper provides a systematic review of the Polybed H2 PSA process, presenting the latest technical advances and discussing its optimal integration in industrial clusters. Additionally, it reviews a bespoke Polybed PSA process designed for simultaneous production of high purity hydrogen and carbon dioxide, aligning with international directives to reduce CO2 emissions and produce blue hydrogen.

Gasification versus fast pyrolysis bio-oil production: A life cycle assessment

A. Alcazar-Ruiz et al.

Summary: This study compares the sustainability of gasification and fast pyrolysis processes for producing bio-oil using agricultural wastes through a life cycle assessment. The findings indicate that gasification has a greater environmental impact than fast pyrolysis for all studied agricultural biomasses. The study also reveals that fast pyrolysis is the most environmentally friendly option for producing 1 MJ bio-oil.

Multi-product biorefinery system for wood-barks valorization into tannins extracts, lignin-based polyurethane foam and cellulose-based composites: Techno-economic evaluation

Olumoye Ajao et al.

Summary: The study aims to explore the feasibility of converting bark into high value products. Results show that bio-based composites made from yellow birch barks exhibit comparable performance to fossil-derived products. In the technoeconomic evaluation, it is found that the biorefinery co-producing polyurethane bio-based foam and bio-based composites is more attractive than a greenfield plant.

Comparative life cycle energy and greenhouse gas footprints of dry and wet torrefaction processes of various biomass feedstocks

Maryam Akbari et al.

Summary: This study compares the life cycle energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions of electricity generation from bio-coals produced from various biomass feedstocks via dry torrefaction and wet torrefaction processes. Results show that most pathways are competitive with coal-based electricity in terms of GHG emissions, with pine woodchips biochar-based electricity generation being the best option in terms of emissions reduction and net energy ratios. Sensitivity analysis of various factors was conducted, and the developed information can be used for investment decisions and policy formulation globally.
