Conversion of waste to sustainable aviation fuel via Fischer-Tropsch synthesis: Front-end design decisions

Natalia Montoya Sanchez et al.

Summary: Front-end design decisions for producing sustainable aviation turbine fuel from waste materials were presented. The design utilizes distributed conversion of waste to oil, which is then transported to a central facility for gasification, syngas cleaning, Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, and refining. The evaluation of different aspects of the front-end design employed case studies, calculations, experimental investigations, and literature review.

Characterization of the viscosity of bio-oil produced by fast pyrolysis of the wheat straw

Muhammad Rizwan Younis et al.

Summary: This study develops a model to describe the viscosity of organic condensate obtained from wheat straw pyrolysis, showing that temperature, solid contents, and water contents significantly affect the viscosity of bio-oil. The viscosity decreases exponentially with increasing temperature, increases exponentially with solid content, and decreases on a logarithmic scale with water content. Additionally, the study suggests that the Nusselt number decreases with increase in viscosity, resulting in decreased overall heat transfer coefficient in organic condensate compared to glycol.

A review of bio-oil upgrading by catalytic hydrotreatment: Advances, challenges, and prospects

Mingyuan Zhang et al.

Summary: Fast pyrolysis and hydrothermal liquefaction are considered promising technologies for liquid bio-fuel production, but the poor quality of crude bio-oils has limited their direct applications. Hydrotreatment such as hydrodeoxygenation is a common upgrading technique, and this review explores the effects of different reaction conditions on the HDO treatment of real bio-oil. The underlying mechanisms for bio-oil HDO, technical challenges, and potential solutions are discussed, along with knowledge gaps and future research directions.

Temperature-dependent viscosity of bio-oil derived from white pine and Norway spruce needles

Oluwatosin Oginni et al.

Summary: Temperature significantly affects the viscosity of bio-oil, with higher temperatures leading to lower viscosity. The bio-oil yield and viscosity of white pine and Norway spruce needles vary at different temperatures. Among the models used to describe the temperature-viscosity relationship, the Arrhenius model provided the best fit for the experimental data.
