Pathways to low-cost clean hydrogen production with gas switching reforming

Shareq Mohd Nazir et al.

Summary: Gas switching reforming (GSR) is a promising technology for natural gas reforming with inherent CO2 capture. The resulting GSR-H2 process concept was found to achieve 96% CO2 capture at a CO2 avoidance cost of 15 $/ton. Compared to conventional steam methane reforming (SMR), GSR-H2 is more suitable for regions with higher natural gas prices and lower electricity prices.

On capital utilization in the hydrogen economy: The quest to minimize idle capacity in renewables-rich energy systems

Schalk Cloete et al.

Summary: The hydrogen economy is gaining attention due to the potential of absorbing variable renewable energy production peaks through electrolysis. However, low utilization rates of different parts of the integrated electricity-hydrogen system present a fundamental challenge. Concurrent optimization of key system elements is necessary to accurately assess the costs of using hydrogen to integrate higher shares of VRE.

Carbon-negative hydrogen: Exploring the techno-economic potential of biomass co-gasification with CO2 capture

Carlos Arnaiz del Pozo et al.

Summary: The hydrogen economy is gaining increasing attention as a complement to electrification in the global energy transition. This study investigates the techno-economic potential of hydrogen production from large-scale coal/biomass co-gasification plants with CO2 capture, achieving attractive hydrogen production costs with the use of advanced configurations. Gasification of locally available solid fuels should be seriously considered as a viable option for supplying the emerging hydrogen economy alongside natural gas and electrolysis.

Finding synergy between renewables and coal: Flexible power and hydrogen production from advanced IGCC plants with integrated CO2 capture

Szabolcs Szima et al.

Summary: This paper presents a techno-economic assessment of flexible power and hydrogen production from VRE, using gas switching combustion and membrane assisted water gas shift technologies. The study shows that these advanced plants can provide a higher annual rate of return compared to traditional benchmark plants during times of abundant wind and sun, demonstrating their promise for balancing VRE.

The Potential of Gas Switching Partial Oxidation Using Advanced Oxygen Carriers for Efficient H2 Production with Inherent CO2 Capture

Carlos Arnaiz del Pozo et al.

Summary: The hydrogen economy has been gaining attention in recent years, with blue hydrogen production emerging as a promising sustainable option. Advanced process concepts utilizing the chemical looping principle show potential for efficient blue hydrogen production, exceeding conventional methods without CCS. Results suggest that advanced oxygen carrier materials could further enhance efficiency and outperform traditional SMR processes with CCS.
