Photochemical Deracemization of a Medicinally-Relevant Benzopyran using an Oscillatory Flow Reactor

Jason D. Williams et al.

Summary: Dynamic deracemization processes, such as crystallization-induced diastereomer transformations (CIDTs), offer the opportunity to combine racemization and resolution processes, providing high yields of enantiomerically pure compounds. By incorporating photochemical racemization and applying design of experiment principles, it is possible to achieve excellent results in just 4 hours reaction time, opening new avenues for preparation of enantiomerically pure functional molecules on both small and industrially-relevant scales.

Fully biobased triblock copolymers generated using an unconventional oscillatory plug flow reactor

Milan Den Haese et al.

Summary: Producing polymers in continuous flow has advantages in terms of efficiency, scalability, and safety. This study presents the use of an oscillatory flow reactor (OFR) to improve continuous-flow polymerization reactions. The use of cubic pillars and oscillatory flow enables turbulent flow, overcoming wall effects and improving residence time distributions. The pulsatile flow enhances mixing and allows for the synthesis of block polymers with variable composition and low dispersity. Furthermore, the OFR system allows for simple scaling without affecting critical process parameters.

Sulfoxide and Sulfone Synthesis via Electrochemical Oxidation of Sulfides

Jin Kyu Park et al.

Summary: The oxidation of diaryl sulfides and aryl alkyl sulfides to sulfoxides and sulfones under electrochemical conditions was studied. Sulfoxides were selectively obtained in DMF with a constant current of 5 mA for 10 hours, while sulfones were the major products in MeOH with a constant current of 10 or 20 mA for 10 hours. The oxygen in both sulfoxides and sulfones is derived from water.

Continuous flow heterogeneous catalytic reductive aminations under aqueous micellar conditions enabled by an oscillatory plug flow reactor

Michaela Wernik et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the successful application of an oscillatory plug flow reactor in enabling heterogeneous catalytic reductive aminations in aqueous micellar media, enhancing mass transport and facilitating process simplicity, stability, and scalability. The method allows for the successful transformation of a broad range of substrates, including amino acid derivatives, under relatively mild conditions, utilizing only small amounts of Pd/C as a readily available heterogeneous catalyst, with the recyclability of the catalyst and reaction media also demonstrated.
