Role of external inputs of nutrients to aquatic ecosystems in determining prevalence of nitrogen vs. phosphorus limitation of net primary productivity

R. W. Howarth et al.

Summary: The net primary productivity in aquatic ecosystems can be limited by nitrogen, phosphorus, or both, depending on the relative supply of N and P compared to the elemental needs of phytoplankton. External and watershed nutrient inputs play a significant role in determining nutrient limitation, with a balanced supply of N and P relative to the Redfield ratio often leading to co-limitation. Coastal ocean sources of nutrients with a low N:P ratio may make nitrogen limitation more likely in coastal marine ecosystems compared to lakes.
