Changes in tree functional composition and forest functioning ten years after logging and thinning interventions in Bornean tropical forests

Ni Putu Diana Mahayani et al.

Summary: The study found that low-intensity reduced-impact logging and thinning operations can maintain functional diversity equivalent to unlogged forest, representing a sustainable strategy for long-term tropical forest management.

Alien parakeets as a potential threat to the common noctule Nyctalus noctula

Silvia Giuntini et al.

Summary: The ring-necked parakeet is a widely distributed species that has established over 40 alien populations worldwide. It competes with threatened bat species for trunk cavities and has shown territorial expansion. In an urban area in Italy, the population of Nyctalus bats is surrounded by an increasing population of ring-necked parakeets. Using species distribution and connectivity models, it was found that the region is highly suitable for the parakeet and there is the potential for direct flow of individuals from urban centers to the bat habitat. Monitoring the invasion of parakeets and conserving suitable areas and ecological corridors is important to prevent the extinction of the bat colony.

Data-driven modelling of group formation in the fission-fusion dynamics of Bechstein's bats

Nicolas Perony et al.

Summary: Communal roosting in Bechstein's bat colonies is characterized by the formation of several groups that use different day roosts and that regularly dissolve and re-merge (fission-fusion dynamics). The study shows that the number of days that bats stay in the same roost before changing follows an exponential distribution and is independent of the colony size. The number and size of roosting groups formed by bats depend on the size of the colony.
