Temporal variation in ant community assemblages along a rural-urban gradient in the Yaounde metropolis, Cameroon

Paul Serge Mbenoun Masse et al.

Summary: Urbanization has a significant impact on ant communities, with an increase in the abundance of exotic ant species over a 10-year period. Suburban areas have an influence on ant species numbers, while urban areas have seen an increase in species richness over the past decade.

Trade-offs and synergies of ecosystem services in the Yangtze River Delta, China: response to urbanizing variation

Sha Chen et al.

Summary: Rapid urbanization has led to significant changes in ecosystem functions and risks, prompting the need for understanding the interactions between multiple ecosystem services and urbanization processes. This study in the Yangtze River Delta in China quantified ecosystem services and identified potential trade-offs and synergies, revealing a trend of functional shifts in urbanizing areas. The results emphasize the importance of considering the connection between urbanization and ecosystems in future landscape planning.

Urban structure and environment impact plant species richness and floristic composition in a Central European city

Nejc Jogan et al.

Summary: Cities play a significant role in shaping the spatial distribution of plant biodiversity, with factors such as distance from city center, habitat diversity, urban heat island, and soil sealing influencing the presence of different species categories. The study in Ljubljana, Slovenia, identified specific patterns related to native, archaeophyte, neophyte, thermophilic, and endangered species, highlighting the importance of considering urban structure and environmental conditions in urban planning to support plant diversity.

Urban ecosystems and ecosystem services in megacity Dhaka: mapping and inventory analysis

Naeema Jihan Zinia et al.

Summary: Urban ecosystems and ecosystem services in South Asian countries have received little research attention despite rapid urban development issues. A typology of urban ecosystems and an inventory of current ecosystem services were developed for Dhaka, revealing a diversity of services including provisioning, regulating, cultural, and habitat services. Evaluation of the states and values of urban ecosystems is crucial for improving urban community wellbeing, with potential implications for region-wide cooperation.

Vincenzo Giannico et al.

Summary: This study examines the relationship between green spaces and citizens' quality of life, environment, social inclusion, and urban management in 51 European cities, as well as the moderating role of per capita income. The results confirm the positive influence of green spaces on citizens' quality of life, with a more pronounced effect in lower-income cities.

The value of ecosystem services in China: A systematic review for twenty years

Wei Jiang et al.

Summary: This study examines over 3000 studies on the value of ecosystem services published in China over the past 20 years, selecting 63 articles for in-depth analysis to lay the foundation for establishing a national database of ecosystem services value. Through the database, the spatial distribution of study sites and ecosystem types, as well as the variation of ES values in different provinces of China, are illustrated. They also establish a national empirical value table and compare it with other existing value tables in the literature.

Oimahmad Rahmonov et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the relationship between mountain communities in the Fann Mountains and the use of ecosystem services, with a particular focus on the importance of juniper forests as key species. The results highlight the significance of juniper in providing valuable services to indigenous communities, emphasizing the need for the protection and restoration of juniper forests in the area.

The value of forest ecosystem services: A meta-analysis at the European scale and application to national ecosystem accounting

Ioanna Grammatikopoulou et al.

Summary: A significant portion of global ecosystem services are provided by forest biomes, emphasizing the importance of acknowledging and valuing these services for sustainable decision-making. Through meta-analysis of 158 primary studies from Europe, it was found that GDP per capita and the type of ecosystem service are key determinants in explaining the variation in forest value. In the case of the Czech Republic, regulation and maintenance ecosystem services were found to be the most valuable, with an estimated total value of approximately 2842 US dollars per hectare per year.

Who Pays the Bill? Assessing Ecosystem Services Losses in an Urban Planning Context

Harald Zepp et al.

Summary: Many European countries are implementing laws and regulations to protect and improve Ecosystem Services (ES) at local and regional levels, and incorporating ES assessments in urban planning can enhance the environmental quality of urban development areas. The evaluation of development alternatives using ES assessments provides a solid basis for selecting sustainable options and estimating compensation amounts, ultimately improving the environmental conditions of affected areas.

Urban change as an untapped opportunity for climate adaptation

Monika Egerer et al.

Summary: Urban social-ecological-technological systems (SETS) are dynamic and responsive to climate pressures, with changes involving alterations to land and resource management, social organization, infrastructure, and design. Research often focuses on the impacts of climate change on urban SETS or characteristics that promote climate resilience, while potentially overlooking opportunities for adaptation through active SETS change by urban residents, planners, and policymakers. Utilizing evidence of urban social, ecological, and technological change can help identify opportunities for improving climate change adaptation within SETS.

Is There Urban Landscape in Metropolitan Areas? An Unobvious Answer Based on Corine Land Cover Analyses

Urszula Myga-Piatek et al.

Summary: The recent increase in urban areas has led to landscape urbanization. The study aimed to assess the intensity of urban landscapes in the seven largest metropolitan areas in Poland and the Ruhr Metropolis in Germany. The analysis found similarities in landscape structure in areas with similar industrial function and spatial organization, while also identifying differences between the landscape of the Upper Silesia-Zaglebie Metropolis and other metropolitan areas in Poland.
