Deadwood Amount at Disturbance Plots after Sanitary Felling

Jan Merganic et al.

Summary: This study assessed the amount of deadwood in Slovakian forest areas after a windstorm in 2014, finding that tree species composition, historical development, and management have an impact on the occurrence, quantity, and distribution of deadwood. The study also found that deadwood coverage and diameter are good indicators of deadwood volume.

River distance, stand basal area, and climatic conditions are the main drivers influencing lying deadwood in riparian forests

Janine Oettel et al.

Summary: Riparian forests, which are among the most diverse terrestrial ecosystems, are facing increasing threats to their biodiversity. In this study, we investigated the deadwood in riparian forests of the Mura-Drava-Danube Transboundary Biosphere Reserve and found that river dynamics, stand basal area, and climatic conditions play important roles in deadwood accumulation and decay.

Standing dead trees as indicators of vertebrate diversity: Bringing continuity to the ecological role of senescent trees in austral temperate forests

Dario Moreira-Arce et al.

Summary: Standing dead trees in temperate South American forests do not significantly impact taxonomic diversity of vertebrate species, with habitat variables affecting diversity similarly in dead and living trees. Similar diversity and composition of vertebrates in both living and dead trees suggest equal conservation value, highlighting the importance of maintaining dying and senescent trees for ecosystem integrity.

How much, why and where? Deadwood in forest ecosystems: The case of Poland

Leszek Bujoczek et al.

Summary: This study used data from the National Forest Inventory in Poland to analyze the relationships between deadwood volume and various natural and human-related factors. Despite interference from random effects and differences in silvicultural approaches, many factors were found to significantly influence deadwood volume. Strong relationships were identified in managed forests, while effects were less pronounced in national parks and nature reserves due to differences in protection type and duration.

Dead wood diversity promotes fungal diversity

Shanshan Yang et al.

Summary: The study evaluated how abiotic and biotic factors affect fungal diversity and composition during dead wood decomposition. Fungal frequency and richness were found to be higher for Angiosperms than for Gymnosperms, and higher for tree species with more acquisitive stem trait strategies. Differences in fungal communities were strongly driven by phylogenetic group, stem traits, decay time, and forest sites, together explaining 23% of the variation.
