Phytoplankton community composition, carbon sequestration, and associated regulatory mechanisms in a floodplain lake system

Junjie Jia et al.

Summary: Phytoplankton contribute significantly to global carbon fixation, but the understanding of C sequestration capacity and driving mechanisms varies across different taxonomic groups. This study proposes a model for phytoplankton carbon fixation based on monitoring data from a floodplain lake system. Results indicate that dominant phytoplankton communities have higher total carbon sequestration potential and gross primary productivity compared to rare phytoplankton communities. The rainy season is associated with increased photosynthesis and metabolism in dominant phytoplankton communities due to higher water levels, temperatures, and solar radiation. Water level fluctuations also affect nutrient and metal concentrations, impacting phytoplankton growth and primary productivity. The floodplain lake system becomes a heterotrophic carbon source, unlike static water lake systems.

Influence of cyanobacterial blooms and environmental variation on zooplankton and eukaryotic phytoplankton in a large, shallow, eutrophic lake in China

Kun Zhao et al.

Summary: The study showed that harmful cyanobacterial blooms have substantial effects on plankton biodiversity and community composition, but physicochemical and temporal-spatial factors in Lake Taihu also play a significant role. High cyanobacterial abundance in the summer did not result in reduced species and functional diversities of phytoplankton and zooplankton compared to other seasons.

Summary: The study demonstrates that the gross primary productivity (GPP) of alpine lake systems is influenced by various environmental factors, with altitude, salinity, solar radiation, and other factors playing significant roles. Geographical features and climate change are important drivers of algal growth and GPP in alpine lake systems.

Phytoplankton communities in temporary ponds under different climate scenarios

Sofia Celewicz et al.

Summary: This study reveals that phytoplankton communities in temporary water bodies undergo succession under the influence of photoperiod and temperature, with different seasonal inundation periods and climate scenarios impacting species richness and taxonomic group abundance. A long photoperiod and moderate temperature were found to be favorable for phytoplankton growth, while high temperatures resulted in a decline in species diversity. These findings suggest that climate change will lead to shifts in species abundance and potential changes in biodiversity in aquatic ecosystems.
