Paleomagnetic constraints on the duration of the Australia-Laurentia connection in the core of the Nuna supercontinent

Uwe Kirscher et al.

Summary: The Australia-Laurentia connection in the Paleoproterozoic to Mesoproterozoic supercontinent Nuna is believed to have started around 1.6 billion years ago, with new high-quality paleomagnetic data from around 1.3 billion years ago suggesting that the two continents were in the same configuration at that time. The breakup of Nuna likely occurred largely between around 1.3 and 1.2 billion years ago, with evidence pointing to a connection between Australia and North China during this period.

Loess landscapes of Europe-Mapping, geomorphology, and zonal differentiation

F. Lehmkuhl et al.

Summary: The article discusses three main depositional regimes for loess formation in Europe and the influences of geomorphology and paleoenvironment on Late Pleistocene loess deposition and preservation. Criteria for dividing loess regions are proposed, and a new map of aeolian sediments distribution in Europe is presented for paleoenvironmental and archaeological studies.

The Sveconorwegian orogeny

Bernard Bingen et al.

Summary: This article reviews the geology and tectonic models of the Sveconorwegian orogeny, proposing an updated geodynamic scenario of a large continental collision starting at around 1065 Ma. It discusses the formation of an orogenic plateau, extensive magmatism, and metamorphic events, pointing towards a shallow asthenosphere under the crust and a retreating delamination of the dense sub-continental lithospheric mantle. The orogenic plateau eventually collapsed around 930 Ma, with extensive erosion removing overburden.

Every zircon deserves a date: selection bias in detrital geochronology

Maximilian Drollner et al.

Summary: Detrital zircon geochronology is a valuable method for addressing geological questions, but biases can influence age signatures. Handpicking of zircon grains has received less attention, with significant differences found between bulk-mounted and handpicked fractions, indicating the presence of inadvertent biases.

Ocean Subduction Dynamics in the Alps

Philippe Agard et al.

Summary: The Alps preserve abundant oceanic blueschists and eclogites that exemplify the selective preservation of fragments of relatively short-lived, small, slow-spreading North Atlantic-type ocean basins. The burial and preservation of these fragments reveal how along-strike segmentation of the continental margin affects ocean subduction dynamics. Sedimentary-dominated units were under-plated intermittently, mostly at similar to 30-40 km depth, whereas some mafic-ultramafic-dominated units formed close to the continent were subducted to similar to 80 km and offscraped from the slab only a few million years before continental subduction.
