Tectonostratigraphic evolution of the Orphan Basin and Flemish Pass region-Part 2: Regional structural development and lateral variations in rifting style

Adam J. Cawood et al.

Summary: The interpretation of modern broadband seismic reflection data and structural restoration of the Orphan Basin, Flemish Pass, and Flemish Cap reveals insights into rift evolution and structural style in the area. Regional extension occurred between 170 Ma and 135 Ma, with later extension accommodated east of Flemish Cap. Seismic mapping shows significant Jurassic strata thicknesses, while structural interpretations emphasize the role of crustal-scale extensional detachment faults in controlling sub-basin geometry.

Assessing the Rotation and Segmentation of the Porcupine Bank, Irish Atlantic Margin, During Oblique Rifting Using Deformable Plate Reconstruction

Pei Yang et al.

Summary: By establishing deformable plate tectonic models with distinct structural inheritance trends, this study reveals the evolution of the Porcupine Bank, highlighting the important role of inherited crustal terranes during rifting and subsequent crustal deformation. The validity of the models is assessed by comparing crustal thickness estimates, and the preferred model suggests strong inheritance and segmentation of the Porcupine Bank and Basin. The reconstructed paleo-positions of the Flemish Cap and Porcupine Bank show evolving conjugate relationships during rifting, indicating time-variant orientations between both margins.

Evolution of the Alpine orogenic belts in the Western Mediterranean region as resolved by the kinematics of the Europe-Africa diffuse plate boundary

Paul Angrand et al.

Summary: The West European collisional Alpine belts are the result of the inversion of the complex western Neotethys and Atlantic continental rift domains initiated in the middle Cretaceous. The pre-collisional extension between Europe and Africa plates was distributed and oblique, building discontinuous rift segments. Continental blocks, including the Ebro-Sardinia-Corsica block, have played a key role in accommodating strike-slip, extension, and contraction in both Iberia and Adria.

Tectonostratigraphic evolution of the Orphan Basin and Flemish Pass region ? Part 1: Results from coupled kinematic restoration and crustal area balancing

Adam J. Cawood et al.

Summary: The structural evolution of the Orphan Basin and Flemish Pass region reveals the presence of low-angle extensional detachments and widespread crustal thinning. Analysis of seismic data indicates that approximately 39% of the extension across the cross-section is unresolved in seismic data, with rifts influencing sediment distribution in the region.

Investigating the Plate Kinematics of the Bay of Biscay Using Deformable Plate Tectonic Models

Michael T. King et al.

Summary: This study utilized GPlates software to create deformable plate tectonic reconstructions of the Bay of Biscay-Parentis rift system, shedding light on the plate kinematics dynamics. Combined with previous geological studies, it provided a basis for delineating the most probable plate kinematic scenario for the Bay of Biscay-Parentis system.

A kinematic reconstruction of Iberia using intracontinental strike-slip corridors

Gianluca Frasca et al.

Summary: This study discusses the challenges in restoring the Mesozoic motion of the Iberian block, introduces the concept of intracontinental deforming regions, and defines the motion path of the Iberia continental block using strike-slip corridors. The resulting kinematic model for the Iberian block is compatible with recent data on Mesozoic circum-Iberian geology.
