Glacier response to Holocene warmth inferred from in situ 10Be and 14C bedrock analyses in Steingletscher's forefield (central Swiss Alps)

Irene Schimmelpfennig et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the fluctuations of mid-latitude mountain glaciers and their relationship with local summer temperature changes. The researchers reconstruct the millennial recession and advance periods of the Steingletscher glacier in the European Alps during the Holocene. The findings suggest that glaciers in the region were similar to or even smaller than their current extent for most of the early and mid-Holocene, indicating that the summer temperatures during that time were similar to those at the end of the 20th century. However, due to the accelerating anthropogenic warming, glaciers in the Alps are currently far from equilibrium, making a simple comparison between modern and paleo-glacier sizes challenging.

Cosmogenic in situ 14C-10Be reveals abrupt Late Holocene soil loss in the Andean Altiplano

Kristina Author Hippecorresponding et al.

Summary: Soil sustainability in the Andean Altiplano has been evaluated by measuring soil erosion and production rates during the late Holocene, revealing a significant increase in erosion linked to environmental changes and the development of Neolithic agropastoralism. The study used in situ cosmogenic C-14 measurements on cultivated hilltops to quantify soil loss and compared it with background soil production rates to identify two scenarios explaining the data. This research highlights the impact of environmental and cultural factors during the late Holocene in the Andean Altiplano.

On the attribution of industrial-era glacier mass loss to anthropogenic climate change

Gerard H. Roe et al.

Summary: Small ice caps and glaciers around the world have been losing mass and retreating since the industrial era, with anthropogenic factors playing a significant role. Recent studies indicate that the combined effects of natural climate change over the past millennium and anthropogenic climate change in the industrial era have contributed to this phenomenon.
