Development of a detection method for short-term slow slip events using GNSS data and its application to the Nankai subduction zone

Yutaro Okada et al.

Summary: This study uses GNSS data and a developed detection method to detect short-term slow slip events (S-SSEs) in the Nankai subduction zone and quantitatively study their regional variation in duration. The method extracts S-SSE signals and enhances them for duration estimation using correlation coefficients and stacking of GNSS time series. The study provides geodetic evidence for the synchronization of S-SSEs and other seismic phenomena in offshore Kyushu and identifies significant regional differences in slip rate.

Filling the Gap in Cascadia: The Emergence of Low-Amplitude Long-Term Slow Slip

Carolyn P. Nuyen et al.

Summary: Evidence of at least one low-amplitude long-term slow slip event has been found in the Cascadia subduction zone, with the possibility of others that are less resolved. While there are other westward long-duration transients in the refined data set, the surface displacements are below the level of the noise or are limited spatially to a few neighboring stations, making interpretation unclear.

Effects of episodic slow slip on seismicity and stress near a subduction-zone megathrust

Saeko Kita et al.

Summary: The study reveals a temporal connection between slow slip phenomena in deep subduction zones and seismicity within the subducting plate. It is inferred that slow slip events within the plate can trigger transient slow slips updip along the plate interface, which may be monitored through in-slab seismic activity.

Earthquake Swarm Detection Along the Hikurangi Trench, New Zealand: Insights Into the Relationship Between Seismicity and Slow Slip Events

Tomoaki Nishikawa et al.

Summary: The study detected earthquake swarms along the Hikurangi Trench in New Zealand using the ETAS model, finding that most earthquake swarm sequences were intraplate events concentrated along the east coast of the North Island. Some earthquake swarms occurred several days before slow slip events, suggesting that SSE-induced stress loading may not be the triggering mechanism for these pre-SSE earthquake swarms.

The source scaling and seismic productivity of slow slip transients

Luigi Passarelli et al.

Summary: The study shows that slow slip events (SSEs) can lead to aseismic strain release along with seismic tremor and earthquake swarms. Larger SSEs tend to last longer and are associated with more intense tremor activity. There is a correlation between aseismic and seismic moment release, with shallower SSEs producing larger seismic moment release than deeper SSEs.

Geological constraints on the mechanisms of slow earthquakes

James D. Kirkpatrick et al.

Summary: The recognition of slow earthquakes has transformed the understanding of plate motion mechanisms, but the mechanics behind slow earthquakes remain enigmatic. Geoscientists have synthesized geological observations of ancient deformation structures to gain insights into fault slip mechanics.
