Pressure and concentration effects on intermineral calcium isotope fractionation involving garnet

Yonghui Li et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of pressure and Ca/Fe concentration on calcium isotopes in garnet were investigated using first-principles calculations. The results show that increasing Ca and Fe concentrations lead to an increase in the average Ca-O bond length and a decrease in the reduced partition function ratio of Ca-44/Ca-40. Pressure also affects the Ca-O bond length and partition function ratio, with an increase in pressure leading to a decrease in the bond length and an increase in the ratio.

Calcium isotope constraints on OIB and MORB petrogenesis: Theimportance of melt mixing

Z. T. Eriksen et al.

Summary: Lithological and isotopic heterogeneity in the mantle provide valuable insights into the mantle's melting history and crustal recycling processes. Oceanic basalts, specifically OIBs and MORBs, are important tools for studying mantle heterogeneity. In this study, the systematics of stable calcium isotopes in OIBs and MORBs were explored to probe mantle heterogeneity.

Ca isotope systematics of carbonatites: Insights into carbonatite source and evolution

J. Sun et al.

Summary: By studying the Ca isotopic composition of carbonatites and associated rocks, it was found that primary carbonatites and associated silicate rocks have relatively homogeneous Ca isotope compositions, while non-primary carbonatites show variations in Ca isotopes that are correlated with C isotopes. This suggests that Ca isotopes fractionate during late stages of carbonatite evolution, making it a useful tool in studying the evolution of carbonatites. It also implies that carbonatites are sourced from a mantle source without the involvement of recycled carbonates.

The Ca isotope composition of mare basalts as a probe into the heterogeneous lunar mantle

Martijn Klaver et al.

Summary: The Ca isotope compositions of mare basalts provide insight into the lunar mantle's heterogeneous nature. Modelling indicates that the dominantly harzburgitic cumulates of the lunar interior should be isotopically heavier than Earth's mantle. Addition of late-stage clinopyroxenite cumulates is required to produce a suitable source that can generate low-Ti basalt compositions.
