Sensitive asprosin detection in clinical samples reveals serum/saliva correlation and indicates cartilage as source for serum asprosin

Yousef A. T. Morcos et al.

Summary: This study developed biochemical methods for measuring and detecting the concentration of asprosin in various body fluids. It found a strong correlation between asprosin levels in serum and saliva. Additionally, the study demonstrated that asprosin levels in connective tissue are associated with levels in serum, and asprosin is expressed in human cartilage. For the first time, this study also measured asprosin levels in breast milk and urine, and suggested saliva asprosin as a potential accessible clinical marker for future studies.

Biomarkers in Neuropsychiatric Systemic Lupus Erythematosus: A Systematic Literature Review of the Last Decade

Julius Lindblom et al.

Summary: This review discusses recent advancements in laboratory biomarkers for the diagnosis, monitoring, and prognosis of neuropsychiatric SLE (NPSLE). Several biomarkers, such as serum IL-6, microRNAs (miR)-23a and miR-155, and CSF alpha-Klotho, show promising ability to distinguish NPSLE from controls. Other biomarkers, including CSF lipocalin-2, M-CSF, and IgM, also display similar capabilities in ethnically diverse cohorts. Serum IFN-alpha and NSE are moderately correlated with disease activity in active NPSLE patients. CSF IL-8, IL-13, and G-CSF exhibit high sensitivity but lower specificity as predictors of therapy response in NPSLE patients. Further validation studies across diverse cohorts are needed.

An Update on the Role of Leptin in the Immuno-Metabolism of Cartilage

Alfonso Cordero-Barreal et al.

Summary: Leptin, a adipokine, has significant impact on cartilage metabolism and pathology by inducing the expression of pro-inflammatory molecules and cartilage degenerative enzymes through its signaling pathway involving the long isoform of the leptin receptor (LEPRb). It has been shown that inhibition of leptin signaling can have protective effects in degenerative cartilage diseases such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and systemic lupus erythematosus. Leptin also plays a key role in increasing the proliferation and activation of immune cells, exacerbating the severity of immune degenerative cartilage diseases.
