Changes in mechanical properties of adipose tissue after bariatric surgery driven by extracellular matrix remodelling and neovascularization are associated with metabolic improvements

Xabier Unamuno et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of weight loss achieved through bariatric surgery (BS) and caloric restriction (CR) on the biomechanical properties of adipose tissue (AT). The results show that BS, but not CR, changes the biomechanical properties of AT and is associated with metabolic improvements. Gene expression levels and blood vessel density were found to be altered in AT after BS, which contributed to changes in the tissue's biomechanical properties.

The endocrine role of brown adipose tissue: An update on actors and actions

Aleix Gavalda-Navarro et al.

Summary: Brown adipose tissue (BAT) acts as an endocrine organ by secreting regulatory factors known as batokines, which exert effects on various tissues and organs including the liver, heart, and skeletal muscle. These batokines play a role in regulating insulin sensitivity, hepatic steatosis, glucose metabolism, and other physiological processes, and further research is needed to understand their impact on human metabolism.

Insights into the Role of Gremlin-1, a Bone Morphogenic Protein Antagonist, in Cancer Initiation and Progression

Noha Mousaad Elemam et al.

Summary: The BMP antagonist Gremlin-1 plays a crucial role in tissue differentiation and embryonic development. It can exert its function through both BMP dependent and independent pathways. Gremlin-1 is also involved in organ fibrosis and has recently been implicated in the initiation and progression of various types of cancers. Additionally, it contributes to the stemness state of cancer cells. This review explores the role of Gremlin-1 in breast, cervical, colorectal, and gastric cancers, as well as glioblastomas, and highlights its impact on cellular processes and signaling pathways involved in carcinogenesis. Gremlin-1 is suggested to be a promising prognostic biomarker and therapeutic target in cancer.

Summary: White adipose tissue, once considered bland, is now seen as dynamic, plastic and involved in various biological processes. High-fat feeding and other metabolic stressors lead to significant changes in adipose tissue, linked to insulin resistance, dyslipidemia and type 2 diabetes. Research provides detailed cellular atlases of human and mouse adipose tissue, highlighting interactions between different cell types in lean and obese states.
