Mateja Pisacic et al.

Summary: This article presents the crystal structure and mechanical properties of a family of one-dimensional coordination polymers, which exhibit two-dimensional anisotropic flexibility. The study reveals that the relative strength and direction of hydrogen bonding interactions play a crucial role in determining the mechanical response.

Prediction of Crystal Structures and Mechanical Properties for Brittle, Plastic, and Elastic Polymorphs of 4-Bromophenyl 4-Bromobenzoate

Artem E. Masunov et al.

Summary: This study continues the development of virtual tensile test for molecular crystals, focusing on different polymorphs with varying mechanical properties. The study shows that the properties of these polymorphs depend on the crystal packing and the topology of hydrogen and halogen bonds. New polymorphs of 4-bromophenyl 4-bromobenzoate crystal structures are predicted through global minimization of lattice energy. The proposed methodology successfully identifies the known polymorphic forms and confirms their mechanical properties computationally.

Summary: Simulation results for isostructural dihalogenide, hexahalogenbenzene, and halogenotrinitromethane crystals under external hydrostatic compression are analyzed. It is found that halogen bonds are more sensitive to external compression than typical Van der Waals interactions of halogens.

Structural Origins of Elastic and 2D Plastic Flexibility of Molecular Crystals Investigated with Two Polymorphs of Conformationally Rigid Coumarin

Keke Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanical behaviors of two polymorphs of the structurally rigid molecule coumarin, revealing that form I crystals exhibit high elasticity while form II crystals are 2D plastic and twistable. The differences in mechanical behaviors are attributed to the molecular packing and interactions of coumarin rather than molecular flexibility.

Quantum Chemical Modeling of Mechanical Properties of Aspirin Polymorphic Modifications

Yevhenii Vaksler et al.

Summary: The study used quantum chemical calculations to investigate the mechanical properties of aspirin polymorphs I and II, showing that they have a layered structure with [001] being the most probable crystallographic direction for shear deformation. On the other hand, polymorph IV was found to have a columnar structure, with the easiest shear deformations possible in the [010] crystallographic direction. The proposed method is a useful tool for predicting mechanical properties of different polymorph structures.

Quantum electronic pressure and crystal compressibility for magnesium diboride under simulated compression

Yury Matveychuk et al.

Summary: The research reveals the relationship between the changes in quantum electronic pressure (QEP) in magnesium diboride crystal and the directional compressibility of the crystal under increasing hydrostatic compression. The preferred arrangement of regions with maximum positive QEP values and minimal changes determines the crystal's resistance to external stresses, shedding light on previously unknown properties of materials. Analysis of quantum electronic pressure demonstrates a direct link between microscopic and macroscopic fundamental quantities.

Understanding stress-induced disorder and breakage in organic crystals: beyond crystal structure anisotropy

Gabriela Schneider-Rauber et al.

Summary: Crystal engineering has advanced strategies for customising the properties of organic solids, with focus on design and synthesis. The mechanical properties of labile multicomponent solids of carbamazepine (CBZ) were investigated, revealing that CBZ center dot 2H(2)O crystals are more prone to breakage due to molecular packing and crystal structure orientation. The strength and temperature-dependence of electrostatic interactions influence stress levels leading to fracture, highlighting the importance of selecting appropriate coformers for superior mechanical properties.

Elastic anisotropy of mechanically responsive molecular solids

Dherya Bahl et al.

Summary: The mechanical properties of organic molecular solids have evolved to include unique behaviors such as flexibility, twisting, and bending, with design models being developed to help express these properties through crystal engineering. However, there is no clear consensus on how structural and energetic factors combine to generate a specific mechanical response. Subtle differences in intermolecular strength or spatial organization significantly impact material mechanics, highlighting the need for tools to quantify interaction anisotropy more effectively.
