Development and characterization of an oral microbiome transplant among Australians for the treatment of dental caries and periodontal disease: A study protocol

Sonia Nath et al.

Summary: Oral microbiome transplantation (OMT) is a novel concept aimed at introducing health-associated oral microbiota into diseased patients to restore oral ecological balance. The study will evaluate the effectiveness, feasibility, and safety of OMT.

Stability of healthy subgingival microbiome across space and time

Ryan Tamashiro et al.

Summary: The subgingival microbiome shows significant differences between individuals and within different subgingival sites within the same individual. Despite the variations in composition, the microbiome at a given site remains remarkably stable over time, with stability associated with increased microbial diversity but inversely correlated with putative periodontal pathogens' enrichment. The predicted functional metagenome, however, shows similarities across space and time, suggesting that periodontal health is linked with shared gene functions encoded by diverse microbiome consortia personalized to individual hosts.

Filifactor alocis: Recent Insights and Advances

E. Aja et al.

Summary: Filifactor alocis is a diagnostic indicator of periodontal disease, known for its resistance to oxidative stress, production of unique proteases and collagenases causing host cell damage, enabling it to thrive and outcompete other pathogens in the inflammatory environment of the periodontal pocket.

Clinical, microbiological, and immunological effects of systemic probiotics in periodontal treatment: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial

Belen Retamal-Valdes et al.

Summary: The study aims to evaluate the effects of probiotics as adjuncts to different treatment protocols for periodontitis, including SRP alone, probiotics with SRP, MTZ+AMX, and probiotics with MTZ+AMX, through clinical, microbiological, and immunological assessments. Statistical analyses will be conducted to compare the outcomes of different treatments and identify predictors for achieving the clinical endpoint for treatment, with statistical significance set at 5%.
