Metalloporphyrins as Catalytic Models for Studying Hydrogen and Oxygen Evolution and Oxygen Reduction Reactions

Xialiang Li et al.

Summary: This Account describes recent investigations on catalytic HER, OER, and ORR with metalloporphyrins and derivatives. The authors focus on exploring metalloporphyrins to study reaction mechanisms and structure-function relationships. They provide insights into H-H and O-O bond formation/cleavage mechanisms in HER, identify Mn-based nucleophilic attack mechanism for O-O bond formation in OER, and propose strategies to enhance activity and selectivity in ORR. The authors also developed strategies to graft metalloporphyrins on various electrode materials for improved electrocatalytic performance. This information is valuable for the development of porphyrin-based catalysts and other molecular and material catalysts for small molecule activation reactions.

Controlling Solar Hydrogen Production by Organizing Porphyrins

Vasilis Nikolaou et al.

Summary: In this study, a highly efficient photocatalytic system for H-2 production is developed using porphyrins as photocatalysts. Self-organization of PdTCP and PtTCP into H- and J-aggregates on TiO2 NPs is crucial for H-2 evolution, with J-aggregated PtTCPs showing higher efficiency than H-aggregated PdTCPs. The simultaneous adsorption of PdTCP and PtTCP onto TiO2 NPs results in the most efficient catalytic system, achieving high turnover numbers.

Summary: In this study, three tunable COF platforms with different linkages were constructed to investigate their visible-light photocatalytic hydrogen production (PHP) performance. It was found that the dianhydride substituted imide-COF (PMDA-COF) showed a sustainable and stable PHP rate under visible light irradiation, along with excellent photo-generated charge separation capabilities. The D-A molecular heterojunction in PMDA-COF plays a crucial role in modifying the electronic band structure and separating the reduction and oxidation sites.
