Multi-stage metamorphic history of the Oki gneisses in Japan: Implications for Paleoproterozoic metamorphism and tectonic correlations in northeastern Asia

Ryoichi Kawabata et al.

Summary: The study integrated P-T conditions, monazite chemical ages, and zircon U-Pb ages from gneisses in the Oki belt, Japan, to unravel the multi-stage metamorphic history of the belt. Three distinct stages of metamorphism were identified: M1, M2, and M3, with M1 occurring around 1.85 billion years ago, M2 occurring approximately 230 million years ago, and M3 representing the final retrograde metamorphism. Detrital zircon distribution and Paleoproterozoic metamorphic events in the Oki gneisses support the hypothesis that these rocks are fragments of a Precambrian terrane.

Early Carboniferous HP metamorphism in the Hida Gaien Belt, Japan: Implications for the Palaeozoic tectonic history of proto-Japan

Takumi Yoshida et al.

Summary: New eclogite localities in the western most region of Niigata Prefecture, Japan were studied to determine metamorphic conditions and pressure-temperature paths, which revealed a hairpin-shaped P-T path from epidote-blueschist to peak eclogite and retrograde blueschist facies. The peak P-T conditions of the eclogites were estimated to be around 600 degrees C and up to 2.0 GPa using various thermobarometry techniques. The results provide clear constraints on the early Carboniferous subduction and contribute to understanding the tectonic history of proto-Japan.

The gabbro to amphibolite transition along a hydration front

Caio A. Santos et al.

Summary: By utilizing thermodynamic modeling, petrographic and mineral chemistry analysis, a suite of amphibolite facies metamafic rocks variably affected by metamorphism were studied, revealing three main types: metagabbro, lineated metagabbro, and amphibolite. The differences in mineral assemblages between these types were primarily controlled by the amount of H2O equilibrated with the rocks, with amphibolites representing fluid-saturated conditions, while metagabbro and lineated metagabbro equilibrated under H2O undersaturated conditions. Variations in microstructure were attributed to varying length scales of diffusion during metamorphism.

Zircon U-Pb geochronology and Hf isotope geochemistry of magmatic and metamorphic rocks from the Hida Belt, southwest Japan

Deung-Lyong Cho et al.

Summary: The integration of zircon U-Pb and Hf isotope data in this study provides a new understanding of the evolution of the Cordilleran arc system in the Hida Belt, indicating significant input from the depleted asthenospheric mantle and/or crustal derivatives in early arc magmatism, while later magmatic activity had a lithospheric mantle origin. The Hida Belt, formed along the margin of the North China Craton, reached its peak in the Permian period, with reworking of the Paleozoic arc crust suggested by highly positive zircon epsilon(Hf)(t) values in Early Jurassic granitoids.
