Numerical analysis of anisotropic stiffness and strength for geomaterials

Fei Song et al.

Summary: In numerical modeling, selecting the right constitutive model is crucial for accurately predicting the response of a geomaterial. Oversimplified or inadequate models may not capture the actual behavior of the material, especially for anisotropic rocks like shales and slates. This paper presents an alternative anisotropic constitutive model implemented in CODE_BRIGHT software to account for the anisotropy of shales and slates in terms of deformability and strength. The model parameters are determined based on laboratory test results, and numerical analyses show good agreement with experimental data, demonstrating the potential applicability of the approach to real-world geomechanical problems.

Fatigue and micro-seismic behaviors of concrete disks exposed to cyclic Brazilian testing: A numerical investigation based on a 3D particle-based model

Zhengyang Song et al.

Summary: This article investigates the mechanical behavior of concrete Brazilian Disk (BD) samples under multi-level cyclic loading through numerical analysis. A particle-based 3D model is successfully established to simulate the dynamic stress-controlled cyclic testing. A generalized model based on the time-dependent evolution of bond diameter is proposed, which effectively reproduces the observed stress-strain curves and displacement fields. An acoustic emission (AE) tracking algorithm is implemented to analyze the released AE energy associated with micro fracturing, which is found to be dependent on stress levels. The numerical simulation results and failure pattern are consistent with the experimental results. The differences between cyclic compressive and cyclic Brazilian tests are discussed and summarized.

Fatigue Failure Characteristics of Sandstone Under Different Confining Pressures

Roohollah Shirani Faradonbeh et al.

Summary: In this study, the fatigue behavior of Gosford sandstone under different stress and confinement levels was comprehensively evaluated. The results showed that the fatigue threshold stress, post-peak instability, and strength weakening/hardening were significantly affected by the applied stress and confinement levels. Furthermore, an empirical model based on the classification and regression tree algorithm was proposed to estimate the peak strength variation of the sandstone.

Parametric Analysis of Failure Loads of Masonry Textures by Means of Discontinuity Layout Optimization (DLO)

Mattia Schiantella et al.

Summary: In this paper, the authors propose using discontinuity layout optimization (DLO) to estimate the failure load and mechanism of non-periodic masonry wall. A parametric analysis is conducted considering different textures, height-to-width ratios, mechanical properties, and load conditions. The results demonstrate the importance of these parameters on the failure load and mechanism, suggesting that DLO can be an effective method for assessing the mechanical strength of non-periodic masonry walls.

Mechanical behaviour of medium-grained sandstones exposed to differential cyclic loading with distinct loading and unloading rates

Zhengyang Song et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanical behavior of medium-grained sandstones under cyclic loading with different loading/unloading rates, using a testing method called differential cyclic loading. The experiments analyze the axial strain evolution and energy dissipation for different loading/unloading rates and maximum cyclic load level. The correlations between P-wave velocities and rock strengths are compared with existing data, and the relationships between final strength, axial strain at failure, and loading patterns are discussed. A rough assessment of the remaining fatigue life is also introduced.

Anisotropic deformability and strength of slate from NW-Spain

L. R. Alejano et al.

Summary: Slates are metamorphic rocks with prominent fissility and anisotropy, with deformability and strength dependent on the orientation of cleavage planes. Experimental results show that failure occurs through cleavage planes within specific dip angles, and that samples cut normal and parallel to foliation exhibit significantly different strengths. The Jaeger's plane of weakness model was used to fit the triaxial compression data on slates, and strength criteria were proposed to differentiate strength in directions normal and parallel to foliation. The use of a non-linear strength criterion for the intact rock (Hoek-Brown) is suggested for better representation of laboratory results.

Mechanical behavior of marble exposed to freeze-thaw-fatigue loading

Zhengyang Song et al.

Summary: The test results indicate that an increase in FT cycles and fatigue load level accelerates the damage rate of marble, leading to larger axial strain rate, radial strain rate, and increasing Poisson's ratio. A warning level is defined based on the evolution of radial strain and Poisson's ratio. Advance ratio and lag ratio are effective indicators for predicting rock failure when subjected to FTF actions.

Elastic Properties Estimation of Masonry Walls through the Propagation of Elastic Waves: An Experimental Investigation

Jacopo Marazzani et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the use of elastic waves propagation through impact tests for the characterization of masonry walls in historic buildings. The impact tests allowed for estimation of the elastic characteristics of masonry material, demonstrating the potential of non-destructive diagnostics in analyzing structural parameters without compromising the preservation of historical masonry structures.
