Effect of the laboratory short-term aging temperature on the chemical and rheological characteristics of high modulus asphalts

Long Cheng et al.

Summary: The study investigated the modification of base asphalt by adding different proportions of Xinjiang rock asphalt and Button rock asphalt, finding that the modified asphalt met the HMAB standard when the addition ratio of XRA and BRA exceeded 12% and 30% by weight of the K64, respectively. Through FTIR, rheological tests, it was revealed that the aging temperature had an impact on the properties of HMAB, with carbonyl jump growth observed at a certain aging temperature. The RTFO aging temperatures for different asphalt mixtures could be determined based on carbonyl jump and equal aging effect between MRTFO and RTFO.

Influence of nano-silica modified rubber mortar and EVA modified porous asphalt on the performance improvement of modified semi-flexible pavement

Asieh Davoodi et al.

Summary: This study aims to improve the overall performance of semi-flexible pavement (SFP), especially its cracking resistance, by approximating the stiffness of its constituent materials. Modified cement mortar and modified porous asphalt were used to enhance the low-temperature bending strength, fatigue life, and rutting resistance of SFP. The results showed significant improvements in these properties for the modified SFP compared to conventional SFP.

Modification of asphalt using polyurethanes synthesized with different isocyanates

Hao Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of isocyanates on the properties of polyurethane modified asphalt. Three different types of polyurethane with varying hard segments were synthesized and used to modify the asphalt. Various analysis techniques were employed to study the rheological properties, modification mechanism, and microstructure of the asphalts. The results show that isocyanates influence the structure and distribution of polyurethane molecules, as well as the distribution of asphaltenes in asphalt, leading to different modification effects on asphalt.

Experimental investigations and quantum chemical calculations of methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI)-based chemically modified bitumen and its crosslinking behaviours

Tianshuai Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanisms of bitumen modification with MDI-based additive by combining physicochemical characterization and DFT-based quantum chemical calculation. The results suggest that MDI molecules can form covalent crosslinking and non-covalent interactions with bitumen molecules, leading to a reinforcing and stiffening effect on the bitumen matrix. Adequate heating and blending are necessary to promote the reaction of MDI with bitumen molecules.

The laboratory performance of asphalt mixture with thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) and amorphous poly alpha olefin (APAO) compound modified asphalt binder

Zhe Hong et al.

Summary: The use of waste polymer modified asphalt binder is cost-effective and environmentally beneficial. By adding thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) and amorphous poly alpha olefins (APAO), the modified asphalt binders showed improved rutting resistance. The combination of 2% TPU and 6% APAO exhibited the best performance in terms of rutting resistance among the studied binders. Mechanical performance tests on asphalt mixtures with different TPU/APAO content combinations confirmed that the modified mixture with 2% TPU and 6% APAO had superior resistance to rutting, moisture damage, long-term aging damage, and freeze-thaw damage compared to the unmodified mixture.
