Effect of sodium carbonate and sodium phosphate on hydration of cement paste

Ting Zhang et al.

Summary: This study found that sodium carbonate and sodium phosphate have different effects on the hydration of cement based on the structure of the precipitates formed, where calcium carbonate precipitate accelerated cement hydration while calcium phosphate precipitate retarded it. The composition and structure of the precipitates were responsible for these effects, with calcium carbonate providing interspace for easier ion dissolution and calcium phosphate forming a more compact layer structure that hindered the transport of water molecules and ions.

The role of Pre-Heating and mineral additive modification on Long-Term strength development of calcium aluminate cement mortars

Faruk Eren et al.

Summary: The strength development of Calcium Aluminate Cement (CAC) is an interesting subject of study. This special cement is preferred in applications that require quick setting ability, high early strength, and resistance to chemical attack. However, the uncertainty in the hydration process and long-term strength problems limit its application. In this study, blended mortar mixtures were prepared with different mineral additives to stabilize the hydration process of CAC and predict its long-term strength.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of Na2CO3 on the properties and hydration products of cement-limestone powder-slag ternary blends. The results showed that Na2CO3 could accelerate the early hydration process and improve the compressive strength and surface resistivity in the early stage. However, it limited the development of compressive strength and ultrasonic velocity in the later stages and reduced the calcium hydroxide content while increasing the crystallinity of calcium carbonate.

The anion exchange properties of AFm (hydrocalumite-group) minerals defined from solubility experiments and crystallographic information

C. A. J. Appelo

Summary: The study re-examined solubility experiments with a non-ideal, multicomponent solid solution model for OH-, Cl-, SO4- and CO3-AFm binary series, and found that the electrical double layer on the mineral's outer surface plays a role in neutralizing anionic charge. The choice of end-members and reaction formulation can help eliminate non-ideality in certain exchanges, while CO3-Cl-OH exchange is not ideal due to the nonlinear volume combination of end-members in the mineral. Solubilities of end-members are related to anion charge and inversely to anion-layer thickness, with pure OH-AFm found to be unstable and converting into other minerals depending on precipitation rate.
