Effects of gravel content and shape on shear behaviour of soil-rock mixture: Experiment and DEM modelling

Yongsheng Yao et al.

Summary: The study found that gravel shape has a greater impact on the shear strength of soil-rock mixture (SRM) than gravel content, and the discrete element method can accurately predict the mechanical properties and deformation behavior of the material. As gravel content increases, the contribution of contact force within gravel particles increases, and the interlocking work has a nonlinear positive correlation with the increase of sphericity.

DEM investigation of strain behaviour and force chain evolution of gravel-sand mixtures subjected to cyclic loading

Zhihong Nie et al.

Summary: The study used discrete element method to simulate the cyclic loading of gravel-sand mixtures with low fines contents, finding that increasing fines content accelerated the development of strain but had little effect on contact forces evolution. Strong contacts tended to develop along loading boundary with spatial differences, while weak contacts were initially controlled by confining pressure and then by axial stress.

YOUNG'S MODULUS OF PEAT SOIL UNDER CYCLIC LOADING

Habib Musa Mohamad et al.

Summary: This study conducted laboratory cyclic triaxial tests on peat soil to investigate its behavior under dynamic loading conditions. The results showed that cyclic loading frequencies caused a reduction in the Young's Modulus of peat soil, affecting its stiffness and softening behavior.

DEM study on the development of the earth pressure of granular materials subjected to lateral cyclic loading

Ming Xu et al.

Summary: The research using the discrete element method to simulate the development of lateral earth pressure of granular materials under cyclic loading found that lateral stresses increase continuously for both loose and dense samples during cycling. The unique relationship between deviator stress ratio on the macro-scale and deviator fabric of strong contacts on the micro-scale was revealed through micro response investigation. The influence of particle shape on macro and micro responses was highlighted through lateral cyclic loading tests on samples with spherical particles.

Assessment of the loading waveform on the cyclic liquefaction resistance with Hostun 31 sand

Zhehao Zhu et al.

Summary: This study highlighted the impact of loading waveforms on the cyclic liquefaction resistance of sand through undrained cyclic triaxial tests. Results showed that rectangular wave loading led to the most severe liquefaction, triangular wave loading resulted in the lowest liquefaction softening, and sine wave loading was in between. In terms of dynamic properties, a unique relationship between the damping ratio and the amplitude of shear strain was observed, and the number of cycles required to trigger a certain level of shear strain depended on the amplitude and waveform. Additionally, a novel parameter based on Arias intensity was proposed to unify the sand liquefaction response.
