Multiscale modelling and analysis of footing resting on an anisotropic sand

N. Guo et al.

Summary: The inherent fabric anisotropy of sand and its evolution were studied using a multiscale approach that combines the finite-element method and discrete-element method. The research found that the bedding plane angle alpha, which measures the average angle between the long axes of particles and the horizontal direction, has a significant influence on the footing bearing capacity and failure mechanism. The bearing capacity decreases as alpha increases and can decrease by up to 25%. Asymmetric deformation was observed in cases where alpha is not 0 degrees or 90 degrees, which can be attributed to the different relative principal directions between stress and fabric. Further analysis revealed that the load-bearing structure of the material becomes more fragile under footing loading and in cases of larger alpha, offering a micromechanical explanation for the observed asymmetric deformation and decreased bearing capacity.

A coupled SPFEM/DEM approach for multiscale modeling of large-deformation geomechanical problems

Ning Guo et al.

Summary: The study proposes a multiscale approach based on the smoothing particle finite element method (SPFEM) and the discrete element method (DEM) to solve large deformation problems in geotechnical engineering. This approach avoids phenomenological constitutive assumptions, effectively simulates large deformation, and provides reliable predictions for collapse and failure of geotechnical problems.
