3D fractal analysis of multi-scale morphology of sand particles with μCT and interferometer

Hong-Wei Yang et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a novel methodology to characterize the particle morphology of sand particles across different scales. The methodology is applied to crushed granitic rock and natural quarzitic sand particles, and the results show different fractal dimensions and self-affine patterns for different types of sand particles. The translation of surface measurements into numerically reconstructed particle morphology is demonstrated using spherical harmonic expansion and power spectral density functions.

Evolution of surface roughness of single sand grains with normal loading

Ting Yao et al.

Summary: The surface roughness of soil grains plays a significant role in the friction angle and stiffness of soil. This study investigates the evolution of surface roughness of natural sand grains under increasing normal load. It is found that the plastic deformation of asperities and bulk of sand grains affect the surface roughness. As the normal load increases, the surface roughness decreases initially and then tends to remain constant.

A Fully Coupled Normal and Tangential Contact Model to Investigate the Effect of Surface Roughness on the Partial Slip of Dissimilar Elastic Materials

Dongze Wang et al.

Summary: The newly developed algorithm provides stable solutions to partial-slip problems of elastically dissimilar materials by adopting a global search method and an alternative convergence criterion. The study shows that surface roughness parameters have an influence on partial-slip solutions under coupled conditions, with different results at different loads.

On stickiness of multiscale randomly rough surfaces

G. Violano et al.

Summary: The new criterion for stickiness in solids with random fractal roughness, based on Persson's theory with DMT-type adhesion, shows that stickiness is unaffected by the truncation of the PSD spectrum at short wavelengths. With typical nanometer values of attractive forces, the criterion justifies the well-known Dalhquist criterion for stickiness, which requires adhesives to have an elastic modulus below about 1 MPa.

Scale and surface morphology effects on the micromechanical contact behavior of granular materials

Chitta Sai Sandeep et al.

Summary: The study found that the normal and tangential stiffness of glass specimens increased with increasing grain diameter, but decreased with increasing equivalent surface roughness. Interface friction increased with increasing equivalent surface roughness, but was not heavily dependent on grain size. Rough interfaces had extended slip displacements, resulting in slower degradation of stiffness.

A contact model for rough crushable sand

Ningning Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, the combination of DEM particle crushing model and rough Hertzian contact model was explored to improve the accuracy and effectiveness of DEM models, especially in the process of particle crushing. Through simulations, it was found that accurately incorporating contact roughness values into the model can better capture particle size evolution and mechanical responses.

Quantitative evaluation of surface roughness for granular materials using Gaussian filter method

Yang Li et al.

Summary: This study introduces a methodology to measure surface roughness of granular materials using a Gaussian filter and known roughness surfaces, determining optimal cut-off wavelengths for various materials. An empirical regression equation is derived to describe the relationship between root mean square roughness, particle size, and cut-off wavelength. The application of this Gaussian filter method is validated for different shapes of granular materials, including glass beads and natural sand grains.
