Evaluation of Tunnel Face Stability Subjected to Seismic Load Based on the Non-associated Flow Rule

Qiguang Di et al.

Summary: This paper focuses on the seismic stability of the tunnel face in cohesion-frictional soils using the non-associated flow rule and pseudo-static approach. An analytical model is proposed and verified through numerical simulations and parametric analyses. Results show that it is essential to consider both the seismic load and soil properties when determining the limit support pressure of the tunnel face.

Design of multi-array shaking table tests under uniform and non-uniform earthquake excitations

Guobo Wang et al.

Summary: The feasibility of the shaking table test based on the multi-array shaking table system of Beijing University of Technology was confirmed by conducting tests on a self-designed rigid model box subjected to uniform and non-uniform excitations. The parameters of the shaking table and model box were explained, and the similarity ratio relationship was determined according to the test conditions. The fundamental frequency tests of the empty model box and box-soil system were carried out, and the results were compared with numerical results. The boundary effect of the free-field shaking table test under uniform and non-uniform excitations was analyzed. The results demonstrated that the model box was properly designed, and the shaking table test was feasible.

Experimental investigation of mechanical characteristics for linings of twins tunnels with asymmetric cross-section

Hebin Zheng et al.

Summary: In this study, a large-scale 3D combined geomechanical model test was conducted to investigate the mechanical characteristics of linings of asymmetrically closely-spaced twin-tunnels constructed in sandy ground. Experimental results revealed that the linings were in a state of compression during excavation, with the smaller diameter tunnel lining being susceptible to bias pressure. The change in stress release direction in the middle soil pillar was identified as the main reason for the stress state change in linings. Furthermore, numerical analyses were performed to verify the experimental results and discuss the influences of various factors on the mechanical behaviors of the linings and stratum.

A settlement prediction model considering tidal loading and traffic loading of soft soil subgrade

Shuangxi Feng et al.

Summary: In this study, a new dynamic constitutive relation considering seepage characteristics was used to predict the settlement of soft soil subgrade in the tidal-flat zone. A settlement prediction program for soft clay subgrade under combined tidal loading and traffic loading was also developed. The research results can be applied to subgrade projects in the tidal-flat zone and provide guidance in engineering decision-making and disaster prevention and mitigation.

Influence of a Landslide on a Tunnel in Loess-Bedrock Ground

Zhijie Sun et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the influence of landslides on tunnels in loess-bedrock strata using model testing and numerical simulation. The deformation characteristics of a tunnel crossing loess-bedrock strata are comprehensively described. The research results can provide reference for the construction and protection of tunnel engineering in loess regions and have reference value for the control of tunnels crossing landslides.

Longitudinal response of buried pipeline under non-uniform seismic excitation from multi-point shaking table tests

Junyan Han et al.

Summary: The study investigated the influence of non-uniform seismic excitation on pipeline response through a series of three-dimensional shaking table tests. Results showed that the pipeline experienced tensile and compressive strains due to longitudinal seismic excitation, with the strain response under non-uniform excitation being approximately twice that of uniform excitation. The interaction between soil and pipeline exhibited complex behavior, with sliding being more likely under non-uniform seismic excitation. The dynamic response of the pipeline-soil system is sensitive to non-uniform ground motion and should be properly considered in seismic pipeline design.

1 g Shaking table test of segmental tunnel in sand under near-fault motions

Yusheng Yang et al.

Summary: A 1 g shaking table test was conducted to investigate seismic responses of a segmental tunnel in sand under near-fault motions. Results showed that the ground fundamental frequency changes with different input motions, and deformation of the segmental tunnel is concentrated on radial joints. Moreover, near-fault motions significantly aggravate the seismic response of both the sand ground and the segmental tunnel.

Centrifuge and numerical modelling of the seismic response of tunnels in two-layered soils

Haizuo Zhou et al.

Summary: This study investigates the seismic performance of underground tunnels constructed in layered soils through dynamic centrifuge tests and numerical modeling. It compares site seismic response and tunnel seismic performance between centrifuge and numerical modeling, as well as dynamic bending moment and axial forces obtained from both methods. Additionally, parametric studies of tunnels in single muddy clay and silty clay are carried out for comparative analysis.
