Seismic bearing capacity of a strip footing on rock media

Obaidur Rahaman et al.

Summary: The bearing capacity factors for a rough strip footing on rock media subjected to horizontal earthquake body forces have been determined using the lower bound finite element limit analysis and power cone programming. The study thoroughly assessed the effects of variations in horizontal earthquake acceleration coefficient, unit weight of rock mass, ground surcharge pressure, and GHB material shear strength parameters on the bearing capacity factors. Non-dimensional charts have been developed for design purposes, and the accuracy of the analysis has been verified through comparison with existing solutions.

Conventional vs. modified pseudo-dynamic seismic analyses in the shallow strip footing bearing capacity problem

Ghazal Rezaie Soufi et al.

Summary: The seismic bearing capacity of strip foundations is studied using the CPD, MPD, and SPD methods, showing consistent results between MPD and SPD. Both methods experience a general reduction in bearing capacity with increasing lambda/B, with fluctuations corresponding to soil natural frequencies.

Modified Pseudo-dynamic Bearing Capacity of Strip Footing Resting on Layered Soil

Litan Debnath et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the seismic bearing capacity of foundations on two-layered c-phi soil using a new pseudo-dynamic limit equilibrium approach, taking into account linear failure surface and visco-elastic soil support. The results are expressed in terms of bearing capacity ratio and show acceptability when compared with other literature. Therefore, the findings can be applied in designing seismically stable shallow strip footings.

Limit Analysis of Modified Pseudodynamic Lateral Earth Pressure in Anisotropic Frictional Medium Using Finite-Element and Second-Order Cone Programming

Hessam Fathipour et al.

Summary: This paper aims to analyze the lateral earth pressures exerted on retaining walls due to the anisotropic medium of dry and noncohesive backfill under modified pseudodynamic earthquake loading. The results show that anisotropy has a significant influence on passive earth pressure, while seismic loading has a more pronounced effect on active lateral earth pressure. The influence of internal friction angle, soil-wall roughness, imposed wavelength, material damping, and inherent anisotropy on lateral earth pressures is thoroughly evaluated and discussed through numerical simulations.

Lower bound analysis of modified pseudo-dynamic lateral earth pressures for retaining wall-backfill system with depth-varying damping using FEM-Second order cone programming

Hessam Fathipour et al.

Summary: Realistic constitutive ground models are crucial for soil-structure interaction problems and seismic analysis. In this study, modified pseudo-dynamic lateral earth pressures on retaining structures with granular backfill of depth-varying damping ratio were evaluated using lower bound limit analysis and finite element discretization. The earthquake loading was simulated by propagation of shear and primary waves through non-constant inertia forces.

Pseudo-static Seismic Bearing Capacity of Shallow Foundations in Unsaturated Soils Employing Limit Equilibrium Method

Mohammad Amin Nouzari et al.

Summary: This paper evaluates the pseudo-static seismic bearing capacity of shallow foundations on unsaturated soil deposits using limit equilibrium method. The increase in matric suction leads to higher soil shear strength and ultimate bearing capacity. The study offers a consistent and useful tool for predicting the seismic bearing capacity of shallow footings on unsaturated soil deposits.

Seismic bearing capacity factor N-gamma e for dry sand beneath strip footing using modified pseudo-dynamic method with composite failure surface

Kshitija Nadgouda et al.

Summary: Accurately modelling time-dependent and random seismic forces is crucial when studying soil behavior under seismic loading. The modified pseudo-dynamic method, which inherently accounts for the amplification of acceleration, is more realistic compared to the pseudo-static method. This method is applied to estimate seismic inertia forces for determining seismic bearing capacity factors, especially in seismically active regions.

Spectral bearing capacity analysis of strip footings under pseudo-dynamic excitation

Ardavan Izadi et al.

Summary: The study evaluates the spectral seismic bearing capacity of strip foundations using the limit equilibrium method and pseudo-dynamic approach. The results consider the contributions of cohesion, surcharge, and soil weight, and show the influence of various factors on the seismic bearing capacity factor. The methodology presented in this study demonstrates efficiency in accounting for seismic loading characteristics and shear strength parameters in determining the bearing capacity of shallow footings.
