Shallow geothermal energy potential for heating and cooling of buildings with regeneration under climate change scenarios

Alina Walch et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a new approach to quantify the technical potential of shallow ground-source heat pumps (GSHPs) and estimate the useful energy for building energy demands at a regional scale. The results suggest that GSHPs can cover a significant portion of heating and cooling demand in Switzerland and provide valuable information for decision making on the installation of GSHPs in strategic areas.

A Monte Carlo building stock model of space cooling demand in the Swiss service sector under climate change

Xiang Li et al.

Summary: The study predicts a significant increase in space cooling demand in the Swiss service sector in the coming decades, driven mainly by the growth in space cooling saturation rate. Factors such as total floor area, service area, ground floor area, and building age were identified as strong predictors of the probability of the presence of space cooling equipment.

Quantifying the technical geothermal potential from shallow borehole heat exchangers at regional scale

Alina Walch et al.

Summary: The utilization of borehole heat exchangers (BHEs) to extract shallow geothermal energy is a promising method for decarbonizing the heating sector, but thermal interference and available area must be considered. A novel method to estimate the technical potential of BHEs was proposed and applied to a case study in western Switzerland, yielding annual technical potential and maximum energy density.

A computational study of a decomposition approach for the dynamic two-level uncapacitated facility location problem with single and multiple allocation

Paganini Barcellos de Oliveira et al.

Summary: This study investigates two variants of a dynamic or multi-period two-level uncapacitated facility location problem and presents an efficient decomposition approach to solve them. By combining Benders decomposition reformulations, a greedy randomized adaptive search procedure, and different Benders cut separation procedures, the devised solution framework outperformed CPLEX and its Benders built-in algorithm in solving challenging large-scale instances.
