Computational investigation of blood cell transport in retinal microaneurysms

He Li et al.

Summary: The study used computational modeling to investigate the pathology of microaneurysms (MAs) in diabetic retinopathy (DR). The simulations showed that factors such as MA size, blood flow velocity, hematocrit, and red blood cell stiffness and adhesion affect the likelihood of platelets entering MAs and their residence time inside.

Multiphysics and multiscale modeling of microthrombosis in COVID-19

He Li et al.

Summary: Emerging clinical evidence suggests that thrombosis in the microvasculature plays an essential role in the progression of COVID-19. Due to limited access to fresh blood samples, researchers used a computational framework to simulate thrombus formation and quantified the contributions of various factors. The results showed that antithrombin and factor V are more prominent in promoting thrombosis, and the recruitment of white blood cells exacerbates blood clotting.

Recent Advances in Computational Modeling of Biomechanics and Biorheology of Red Blood Cells in Diabetes

Yi-Xiang Deng et al.

Summary: Diabetes mellitus, a metabolic disease, has significant impacts on blood hematological properties. However, clinical and experimental studies are unable to directly quantify the contributions of these abnormalities. Computational modeling provides a new approach to investigate the abnormal properties of diabetic blood.

Understanding the andromeda strain-The role of cytokine release, coagulopathy and antithrombin III in SARS-CoV2 critical illness

Nabiel Mir et al.

Summary: Physicians and scientists around the world are studying the pathophysiology of COVID-19, with a focus on its potential prothrombotic effects. The routine use of prophylactic heparin is recommended for severe infections to reduce thrombotic complications, due to reductions in Antithrombin III levels associated with coronavirus-related critical illness. Further research is needed to explore the use of AT as a prognostic marker and potential therapeutic target for COVID-19.

Coagulation dysfunction in COVID-19: The interplay between inflammation, viral infection and the coagulation system

Maria Grazia Lazzaroni et al.

Summary: COVID-19 is a new pandemic caused by SARS-Cov2 infection, with inflammation and the innate immune system playing key roles in the most severe cases. Abnormalities in coagulation parameters and platelets count have been reported, suggesting a subgroup of patients with poor prognosis. The cytokine storm and virus-specific mechanisms may also contribute to adverse outcomes in COVID-19.

Multisystem effects of COVID-19: a concise review for practitioners

Gabrielle White-Dzuro et al.

Summary: Although COVID-19 primarily affects the respiratory system, it can impact every organ system and carries a high risk of death in critically ill patients. Higher SOFA scores are associated with increased mortality. Clinicians should be aware of the multisystem impact of the disease and focus on preventing end-organ injuries to potentially improve clinical outcomes for critically ill COVID-19 patients.

Computational modeling of biomechanics and biorheology of heated red blood cells

Zixiang Leonardo Liu et al.

Summary: Heated erythrocytes have been used as probes to study spleen tissue and the retention ability of the spleen for over three decades. Through computational studies, it has been shown that heated RBCs exhibit deformability deterioration similar to certain diseased RBCs, providing a potential model for studying abnormal traversal dynamics and hemorheology. The rheology test expands existing data and highlights the differences between heated RBC suspensions and certain diseased RBC suspensions.

Summary: This study addresses the physical and biochemical effects during thrombosis in aneurysms and recirculation zones, using a continuum description and partial differential equation-based model to account for fluid dynamics, platelet transport, adhesion and aggregation, and biochemical cascades of plasma coagulation. The research focuses on the role of blood cell transport and accumulation, including interactions between platelets and red blood cells, as well as the impact of hematocrit-dependent blood rheology on the growth of aneurysmal thrombus.
