Wearable In-Ear PPG: Detailed Respiratory Variations Enable Classification of COPD

Harry J. Davies et al.

Summary: The ability to extract detailed breathing waveforms from wearable sensors can greatly enhance respiratory health monitoring. By comparing the extraction of respiratory modes from the ear canal and finger, it is found that recording from the ear canal improves respiratory power for intensity and pulse amplitude variations. A data-driven multi-scale method is then used to extract detailed respiratory waveforms from in-ear photoplethysmography (PPG), which shows promise for the screening of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and unobtrusive respiratory monitoring.
