Anisotropic compression behaviors of bio-inspired modified body-centered cubic lattices validated by additive manufacturing

Peng Wang et al.

Summary: The modified body-centered cubic (MBCC) lattice structure, inspired by the deep-sea glass sponge, has been designed and optimized to have better energy absorption capacity compared to conventional structures. Extensive finite element simulations and experimental tests have validated its performance. Results show that the MBCC lattice exhibits higher energy absorption capacity than previous bio-inspired and conventional structures, approaching that of titanium alloy foams.

Designing and tailoring effective elastic modulus and negative Poisson's ratio with continuous carbon fibres using 3D printing

Yuan Chen et al.

Summary: The research utilized 3D printing and carbon fiber reinforcement to enhance the mechanical properties and negative Poisson's ratio of base polymers. The results showed that the effective elastic modulus and compression strength of PA specimens can be linearly enhanced by adding carbon fibers. Additionally, a small amount of carbon fibers can significantly increase the negative Poisson's ratio of PA composite materials.

Tailoring 3D printed graded architected polymer foams for enhanced energy absorption

Huan Jiang et al.

Summary: By investigating the effects of graded designs on compressive mechanical performance of 3D printed architected polymer foams, it was found that hybrid foam exhibited significant enhancement in specific energy absorption and stiffness compared to uniform foam, graded binder foam, and graded thickness foam. The specific energy absorption and stiffness of the hybrid graded foam also outperformed lattice-based and shell-based graded foams. These findings provide a new avenue for engineering architected materials with enhanced mechanical properties for a wide range of applications.
