A Critical Review of Blast Wave Parameters and Approaches for Blast Load Mitigation

P. A. Shirbhate et al.

Summary: The rise in casualties and economic losses from major terrorist attacks in recent decades has drawn attention to the performance of engineering structures under blast loads by scientists and structural engineers. The availability of small size explosive devices with powerful and high range explosive materials has significantly increased the threat posed by explosions. Analysis and design of structures vulnerable to such tragic events are necessary to resist extreme loading conditions caused by explosions.

Impact resistance of bio-inspired sandwich beam with side-arched and honeycomb dual-core

A. B. H. Kueh et al.

Summary: The study computationally explores the impact resistance of a bio-inspired sandwich beam, inspired by the beak, skull bone, hyoid, and spongy bone of the woodpecker head. Geometrical effects on impact behaviors are examined, and the beam with a thin arched core is found to perform optimally due to its high impact resistance efficiency index. Models with thicker arched cores exhibit higher contact force, damage area, and energy absorption, while thinner arched cores with varying leg spans are maximally stressed.

Close-in blast resistance of large-scale auxetic re-entrant honeycomb sandwich panels

Dulara Kalubadanage et al.

Summary: The study focuses on sacrificial cladding systems based on negative Poisson's ratio core topologies as a protective technology for critical infrastructure. Both experimental and numerical results show that these systems exhibit good energy absorption capabilities under blast loads. The deformation pattern and negative Poisson's ratio of the system vary with blast loading intensity, and careful design is required to prevent overloading under different blast threats.

Energy absorption characteristics of additively manufactured plate-lattices under low- velocity impact loading

J. Jefferson Andrew et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the low-velocity impact response of 3D plate-lattices fabricated via stereolithography additive manufacturing. The hybrid lattices were found to attenuate peak impact stress and extend load pulse duration, leading to higher toughness and energy absorption capacity. The distribution of plates in each elementary structure in hybrid configuration plays a crucial role in transforming brittle mode fracture into progressive damage of the plate-lattices.

The Effect of Geometry on Structural Behavior of Buildings with Steel Plate Shear Wall System Subjected to Blast Loading

Mohammad Shabanlou et al.

Summary: Structures with steel plate shear wall systems perform better under blast loading in high-rise buildings than in low-rise buildings. The behavior of steel frames with different heights and widths varies under different blast scenarios, with the steel plate shear wall system exhibiting shear-dominated, flexural-dominated, and shear-flexural behavior in low-rise, high-rise, and mid-rise structures respectively. In mid-rise and high-rise buildings, the roof's maximum horizontal acceleration occurs during free vibration, while in low-rise buildings, it happens during loading. Additionally, the maximum horizontal displacement of the roof also occurs during free vibration, with the occurrence happening later as the number of stories increases.

Sandwich Structures for Energy Absorption Applications: A Review

Faris Tarlochan

Summary: It is essential to design proper engineering structures as energy absorbers for high dynamic loading situations, such as accidents, blasts, or impacts. One type of energy absorbers is sandwich structures, which are capable of absorbing high kinetic energy through irreversible deformation. These structures, particularly with foam and architected cores, show potential for wider applications due to their lightweight nature and high-energy absorption capabilities, despite the lack of consensus on a particular design among existing literature.
