Exploring shear alignment of concentrated wormlike micelles using rheology coupled with small-angle neutron scattering

Joshua P. King et al.

Summary: Wormlike micelles (WLMs) are important components in many consumer products and industrial fluids due to their shear-dependent viscous texture. The alignment of the worms in the shear field plays a crucial role in their behavior during shear, leading to rapid ordering loss when shear stops. However, most studies on these systems have been limited to dilute solutions, and analyzing shear-induced many-body effects in high volume fraction dispersions has proven to be complex. In this study, the shear alignment of concentrated WLM solutions was explored, and it was found that these concentrated worms can be approximated as cylinders that align more with the shear direction as volume fraction and shear rate increase.

Heads or tails? The synthesis, self-assembly, properties and uses of betaine and betaine-like surfactants

Veena T. Kelleppan et al.

Summary: Betaines are a key class of zwitterionic surfactants that are readily biodegradable, mild on the skin, and exhibit some antimicrobial activity. They self-assemble into diverse micellar geometries, contributing to increased solution viscosity, and their surface activity results in strong detergency and foaming. Their behavior has been utilized in various applications, from personal care to specific industrial fields.

Double-Chain Cationic Surfactants: Swelling, Structure, Phase Transitions and Additive Effects

Rui A. Goncalves et al.

Summary: Double-chain amphiphilic compounds play a significant role in personal care and biology, with phase structures and transitions influenced by additives of different polarity. The study focused on dioctadecyldimethylammonium chloride (DODAC) revealed a dominance of L-beta and L-alpha phases, with various additives having diverse effects on phase stabilities and structures. Certain additives were found to induce transitions to other phases beyond L-beta and L-alpha, such as cubic, reversed hexagonal liquid crystals, and bicontinuous liquid phases.
