Surfactant Removal for Colloidal Nanocrystal Catalysts Mediated by N-Heterocyclic Carbenes

Perrin Godbold et al.

Summary: The removal of surfactants from colloidal synthesized nanocrystals via ligand exchange with N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) followed by protonation of the NHC ligands in acid efficiently cleans the nanocrystals' surface while preserving their uniform morphology and structure for catalysis. This surface activation strategy showed significantly improved catalytic activities for monodisperse Pt, Pd, and Au nanocrystals, surpassing other cleaning methods, as demonstrated in glycerol oxidation and CO2 reduction electrochemical reactions. This work highlights a new surface activation strategy that enables the efficient use of well-defined nanocrystal libraries for catalysis and other applications prepared by colloidal chemistry.

CO2 and Temperature Control over Nanoaggregates in Surfactant-Free Microemulsion

Yue Zhou et al.

Summary: This study reported the first example of surfactant-free microemulsion that responds to dual stimuli, using a CO2-sensitive hydroxyethylamine as an amphisolvent. The SFME was found to have a stable single-phase region and high sensitivity to CO2 and temperature changes. The behavior of the SFME was attributed to the reversible protonation and deprotonation of the hydroxyethylamine under CO2 and temperature influences.

Synthesis of nanoscale zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) using reverse micro-emulsion for Congo red adsorption

Xiao-qiang Cao et al.

Summary: This study developed a reverse micro-emulsion system to synthesize nano ZIF-8 material for efficient removal of Congo red dye from water. The synthesis conditions were optimized to achieve a nano ZIF-8 with a specific surface area of 1477 m(2)/g, showing a uniform particle size distribution of 15 to 35 nm. Adsorption of Congo red on nano ZIF-8 was found to be an endothermic process following pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models, with maximum predicted adsorption capacity of 1339.8 mg/g at 323 K. Adsorption mechanism analysis indicated electrostatic interactions and physical attractions including hydrogen bonds and pi-pi bond interactions play a major role.
