Epileptic seizures in a heterogeneous excitatory network with short-term plasticity

Chuanzuo Yang et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the abnormalities of epilepsy and their association with excitability and synaptic dynamics, proposing models for different regions involved in epileptic processes. A novel short-term plasticity model was introduced to describe synaptic behavior and the role of hyperexcitability in seizure susceptibility. Numerical simulations and cross recurrence plot analysis were used to explore the epileptic process and synchronization between neuronal populations.

Dependency analysis of frequency and strength of gamma oscillations on input difference between excitatory and inhibitory neurons

Xiaochun Gu et al.

Summary: This study reproduced the experimental observations of gamma oscillations in an excitatory/inhibitory neuronal network and found that the oscillation strength and frequency are regulated by the input difference between excitation and inhibition neurons. The mechanism of gamma oscillation induction was attributed to the unbalance between positive and negative synaptic currents caused by input difference between excitation and inhibition neurons, resulting in stronger gamma oscillations. The frequency dependency of gamma oscillation on the input difference could be explained by inter-neuron-gamma and pyramidal-interneuron-gamma mechanisms, which were verified through mathematical analysis consistent with simulation results.

Delayed excitatory self-feedback-induced negative responses of complex neuronal bursting patterns*

Ben Cao et al.

Summary: This study investigates two different bursting patterns and finds that excitatory modulation can reduce the number of spikes per burst under suitable time delay and self-feedback strength. The average firing frequency of the bursting patterns shows different trends, which are related to their internal mechanisms.

Multi-time scale dynamics of mixed depolarization block bursting

Lixia Duan et al.

Summary: The study looked at a two-coupled excitatory neurons model in the pre-Botzinger complex, which includes calcium-activated non-specific cationic and persistent sodium current. A new type of mixed burst similar to depolarization block bursting was observed. The dynamics and bifurcation analysis showed that the periodic fluctuation of calcium concentration plays a crucial role in the generation of mixed bursting, while changes in time scale and position of bifurcation curves also significantly influence bursting patterns.

Paradoxical enhancement of neuronal bursting response to negative feedback of autapse and the nonlinear mechanism

Bo Lu et al.

Summary: This paper investigates paradoxical phenomena in bursting activity modulated by inhibitory autapse, revealing that with increased inhibitory autaptic conductance, burst duration widens or spike number per burst increases. Different bursting patterns are observed, and the paradoxical enhancement of bursting activity is explained by nonlinear dynamics.

Inhibitory autapses enhance coherence resonance of a neuronal network

Yanbing Jia et al.

Summary: Inhibitory autapses enhance coherence resonance (CR) in a Hodgkin-Huxley neuronal network through post-inhibitory rebound (PIR) spikes. The degree of CRs can be enhanced by inhibitory autapses with time delays approximating to 10 ms or the sum of 10 ms and multiples of the firing period. This counterintuitive phenomenon enriches nonlinear dynamics and provides a novel approach to modulate CR or the firing regularity of neuronal networks.

Enhancement of coherence resonance induced by inhibitory autapse in Hodgkin-Huxley model

Xueli Ding et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the role of inhibitory autapse in enhancing coherence resonance induced by noise in the Hodgkin-Huxley model. It is found that the inhibitory autapse can both inhibit and induce spikes, leading to a stronger degree of coherence resonance with increasing autaptic conductance. The phenomenon can be extended to stochastic systems, presenting potential measures to modulate coherence resonance degree and information processing.

Impact of GABAA and GABAB Inhibition on Cortical Dynamics and Perturbational Complexity during Synchronous and Desynchronized States

Almudena Barbero-Castillo et al.

Summary: This study explored the role of GABAergic inhibition in cortical complexity, finding that physiological levels of inhibition contribute to dynamical richness and spatiotemporal complexity, while decreased or increased inhibition leads to decreased cortical complexity. Using a computational model, the study demonstrated a link between excitatory/inhibitory balance and the complexity expressed by the cortical network.

Impacts of autapse on chaotic resonance in single neurons and small-world neuronal networks

Veli Baysal et al.

Summary: Chaotic resonance (CR), induced by an intermediate level of chaotic signal intensity in neuronal systems, is significantly increased by autapse regardless of its type. Multiple CR emerges at the optimal chaotic current intensity depending on autaptic time delay, and excitatory autapses prominently increase the prorogation of pacemaker activity in small-world neuronal networks.

Initiation of migraine-related cortical spreading depolarization by hyperactivity of GABAergic neurons and NaV1.1 channels

Oana Chever et al.

Summary: Spreading depolarizations (SDs) are involved in various neurological conditions, with GABAergic interneurons playing a key role in the initiation of cortical spreading depression (CSD). The study found that hyperactivity of GABAergic interneurons can ignite CSD in the neocortex without the need for GABA or glutamatergic synaptic transmission. This neocortex-specific mechanism of CSD initiation is relevant to familial hemiplegic migraine type-3 (FHM3) caused by gain-of-function mutations of Na(V)1.1.
