The Relative Validity and Reproducibility of Food Frequency Questionnaires in the China Kadoorie Biobank Study

Chenxi Qin et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the validity and reproducibility of qualitative and quantitative food frequency questionnaires (FFQs) in the Chinese population. The results showed that most food items in both the qualitative and quantitative FFQs had acceptable or good validity and reproducibility in the CKB study. However, dried vegetables and carbonated soft drinks performed poorly, indicating the need for modification and validation in future research.

Association of total pre-existing comorbidities with stroke risk: a large-scale community-based cohort study from China

Ya Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that hypertension, congenital heart disease, previous stroke, and diabetes are four pre-existing comorbidities that are independently and positively associated with the risk for all types of stroke. Participants with 1 or more pre-existing comorbidities had nearly 2 and nearly 3 times higher risk of stroke, respectively, compared to those without pre-existing conditions.

Neuroendocrine Effects of Carnitines on Reproductive Impairments

Tabatha Petrillo et al.

Summary: Carnitines, as quaternary amines, play a role in various cellular processes and have been studied for their beneficial effects in different physio-pathological conditions. They are capable of improving neuroendocrine impairments and metabolic parameters, making them a potential treatment option for reproductive disorders like functional hypothalamic amenorrhea and polycystic ovary syndrome.

Trimethylamine N-Oxide (TMAO), Diet and Cardiovascular Disease

Minu S. Thomas et al.

Summary: The link between plasma TMAO levels and CVD risk is established in epidemiological research, but the role of dietary precursors in determining TMAO levels is still inconclusive. Recent studies show positive associations between plasma TMAO concentrations and various CVD risk factors, but the impact of dietary choline and carnitine on chronic plasma TMAO levels and CVD risk requires further investigation.

Application of Metabolomics to the Discovery of Biomarkers for Ischemic Stroke in the Murine Model: a Comparison with the Clinical Results

Jinjing Jia et al.

Summary: Metabolomics studies on ischemic stroke suggest that certain metabolites show consistency in murine models, associated with disruptions in multiple metabolic pathways that may involve factors affecting biological processes such as energy failure and oxidative stress. Some metabolites and metabolic pathways found in blood samples and animal models have potential biomarker value.
