EEG theta and alpha oscillations in early versus late mild cognitive impairment during a semantic Go/NoGo task

Elizabeth A. Lydon et al.

Summary: This study revealed differences in cognitive control between early and late MCI stages at the neural level, despite the lack of observable behavioral differences. The LMCI group showed higher theta synchronization on Go trials compared to the EMCI group, while the EMCI group exhibited differences in theta and alpha power between Go and NoGo trials. These neural changes may be useful in understanding the trajectory of aMCI in future studies.

Baseline delayed verbal recall predicts response to high definition transcranial direct current stimulation targeting the superior medial frontal cortex

Hsueh-Sheng Chiang et al.

Summary: Baseline delayed verbal recall may predict therapeutic effects of HD-tDCS targeting the pre-SMA/dACC for verbal retrieval deficits in individuals with chronic TBI. Those with impaired baseline delayed recall showed significant improvement in category fluency and color-word inhibition/switch, while those with intact delayed recall showed significant improvement only in color-word inhibition/switch.

The Effect of Non-Invasive Brain Stimulation (NIBS) on Executive Functioning, Attention and Memory in Rehabilitation Patients with Traumatic Brain Injury: A Systematic Review

Takatoshi Hara et al.

Summary: Research on the potential of non-invasive brain stimulation for cognitive function rehabilitation in traumatic brain injury is still at an early stage, with some studies showing significant improvement compared to control groups, but overall evidence of effectiveness is lacking. Further studies are needed to evaluate brain activity at the stimulation site using neuroimaging to understand how NIBS affects the neural network.

Case Report: Improving Verbal Retrieval Deficits With High Definition Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation Targeting the Pre-Supplementary Motor Area in a Patient With Chronic Traumatic Brain Injury

Hsueh-Sheng Chiang et al.

Summary: In this study, utilizing High Definition-transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (HD-tDCS) targeting the pre-Supplementary Motor Area (pre-SMA) significantly improved cognitive deficits such as verbal retrieval deficits in a patient with severe traumatic brain injury. The effects persisted for up to 14 weeks after completion of the treatment, suggesting that region-specific non-invasive brain stimulation can induce longer-lasting neuroplasticity even in the chronic phase of TBI.

Intervention Effect of Non-Invasive Brain Stimulation on Cognitive Functions among People with Traumatic Brain Injury: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Daniel Kwasi Ahorsu et al.

Summary: This study reviewed the treatment effect of non-invasive brain stimulation on cognitive functions in traumatic brain injury patients. The results showed a moderate significant overall effect of NIBS on cognition, with specific moderate effect sizes found for cognitive sub-domains including attention, memory, and executive function.
