Seasonal Cumulative Effect of Ural Blocking Episodes on the Frequent Cold events in China during the Early Winter of 2020/21

Yao Yao et al.

Summary: Based on the analysis, this paper demonstrates that China experienced several extreme cold events during the early winter of 2020/21, with record-breaking temperatures. The outbreak of these extreme cold events can be attributed to a massive merging Ural blocking (UB) ridge over the Eurasian region. Additionally, the UB has significant impacts on sea-ice cover and atmospheric circulation, leading to the frequent occurrence of extreme cold events.

Summary: This study analyzes the distinct features of two supercold waves that hit China in 2020 and 2021 and finds their association with the accumulation of cold air in Siberia under the Arctic amplification background, as well as the impact of different blocking circulations and the collision of the Asian blocking pattern with the polar vortex deflection towards East Asia.

An Isentropic Mass Circulation View on the Extreme Cold Events in the 2020/21 Winter

Yueyue Yu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanisms behind the extreme cold events that occurred in East Asia and North America during the 2020/21 winter. The results suggest that the strengthening of the low-level equatorward cold air branch of the isentropic mass circulation (IMC) played a crucial role in these events. The intensification of cold air transport in East Asia was influenced by Arctic sea ice loss, while the weakened cold air transport in North America was associated with warmer sea surface temperatures in the northeastern Pacific.

Influence of Major Stratospheric Sudden Warming on the Unprecedented Cold Wave in East Asia in January 2021

Yingxian Zhang et al.

Summary: In early January 2021, an unprecedented cold wave hit East Asia, which was influenced by a major stratospheric sudden warming event. This event caused the displacement of the stratospheric polar vortex to East Asia and triggered an inverted omega-shaped circulation pattern, leading to the outbreak of the cold wave.

The 2020/21 Extremely Cold Winter in China Influenced by the Synergistic Effect of La Nina and Warm Arctic

Fei Zheng et al.

Summary: This report highlights that the frequent cold surges in the winter of 2020/21 were mainly caused by large-scale atmospheric circulation anomalies in the mid-high latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere, with the synergistic effect of the warm Arctic and La Nina intensifying these anomalies.

The Nature and Predictability of the East Asian Extreme Cold Events of 2020/21

Guokun Dai et al.

Summary: Three extreme cold events occurred in China between December 2020 and mid-January 2021, leading to drastic temperature drops and setting new low-temperature records. These events were associated with low Arctic sea ice extent and a La Nina event, with the third event showing the highest predictability in forecasting East Asian cooling. Further research on the predictability of these cold events and their relationships with atmospheric initial conditions, Arctic sea ice, and La Nina is warranted.

Effects of spring Arctic sea ice on summer drought in the middle and high latitudes of Asia

Dong Chen et al.

Summary: Based on data from 1979 to 2017, this paper analyzes the influence of Arctic sea ice in the previous spring on the interannual variation of summer drought in the middle and high latitudes of Asia (MHA). The results show that changes in sea ice lead to the Polar-Eurasian teleconnection pattern, affecting precipitation, snow depth, temperature, and soil moisture in different regions of MHA, and ultimately modulating changes in summer drought.

Extreme Cold Events from East Asia to North America in Winter 2020/21: Comparisons, Causes, and Future Implications

Xiangdong Zhang et al.

Summary: The three extreme cold weather events were caused by anomalies in three oceans and interactions between Arctic-lower latitude atmospheric circulation processes, influenced by a sudden stratospheric warming event. These events disrupted the stratospheric polar vortex and led to cold air outbreaks, with implications for prediction skill and policy decision making for resilience in One Health, One Future.

Possible Dynamic Mechanisms of High- and Low-Latitude Wave Trains Over Eurasia and Their Impacts on Air Pollution Over the North China Plain in Early Winter

Xiadong An et al.

Summary: This study uses the empirical orthogonal function (EOF) to analyze the wave trains over Eurasia in boreal winter. It finds that the bifurcation of the wave train is related to the Rossby wave reflection near the Mediterranean, while the non-bifurcated wave train is mainly influenced by natural internal variability. The wave train associated with the EOF1 mode is suggested to be related to the eastern Pacific El Nino, while the wave train associated with the EOF2 mode is mainly induced by natural internal variability. The bifurcation type wave train tends to cause higher PM2.5 concentrations over the North China Plain.

Effect of rainfall-induced diabatic heating over southern China on the formation of wintertime haze on the North China Plain

Xiadong An et al.

Summary: During the winters between 1985 and 2015, the North China Plain experienced heavy haze episodes that coincided with extreme rainfall in southern China. This study uses observations and model simulations to show that anomalous anticyclonic circulation, caused by Rossby wave trains, together with the north-south circulation system, plays a key role in modulating the haze over the North China Plain. Additionally, the study highlights the importance of diabatic heating related to precipitation in driving the north-south circulation system and the formation of haze.

Relationship between two types of heat waves in northern East Asia and temperature anomalies in Eastern Europe

Xiaoye Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, the hierarchical clustering algorithm was used to classify summer heat waves (HWs) in northern East Asia (NEA) into wave-train HW and blocking HW. Over the past 38 years, the wave-train HWs have increased significantly, while no clear trend was observed in blocking HWs. The development of wave-train and blocking indices facilitated the objective identification of HW types and circulation characteristics. Numerical simulations using a linear baroclinic model revealed that wave-train HWs are associated with a heating anomaly over southern Greenland, while blocking HWs are linked to a cooling anomaly over the Barents Sea.

Impact of Sea Ice Reduction in the Barents and Kara Seas on the Variation of the East Asian Trough in Late Winter

Mian Xu et al.

Summary: The study shows that reduction of sea ice in the Barents-Kara Seas leads to a deepening of the East Asian trough in late winter, mainly through tropospheric and stratospheric pathways. Analysis using climate models and tracing models reveals that the climate system response to BKS sea ice reduction is primarily through the propagation of long Rossby waves and enhanced upward planetary waves to impact the East Asian trough.

Impact of early spring sea ice in Barents Sea on midsummer rainfall distribution at Northeast China

Tingting Han et al.

Summary: The study reveals that an increase in sea ice area in the Barents Sea during early spring can influence midsummer rainfall in Northeast China, leading to positive and negative anomalies in rainfall distribution. The sea ice anomalies trigger anomalous circulation and impact rainfall patterns by modulating surface air temperature and vertical stability.

Wintertime Cold Extremes in Northeast China and Their Linkage with Sea Ice in Barents-Kara Seas

Yongyue Luo et al.

Summary: The study investigates the impact of Arctic sea ice on the interannual variability of extreme low temperatures in Northeast China. Results show that frequent extreme low temperature years are associated with decreased sea ice in the Barents-Kara Seas and positive sea surface temperature anomalies, leading to northward transport of cold air to the region. Rare extreme low temperature years exhibit opposite characteristics.
