Robust but weak winter atmospheric circulation response to future Arctic sea ice loss

D. M. Smith et al.

Summary: The extent to which Arctic sea ice decline affects mid-latitude atmospheric circulation is still debated. This study uses a multi-model experiment to show that Arctic sea ice loss weakens mid-latitude westerly winds, but the overall effect is small. The relationship between Arctic sea ice and atmospheric circulation has weakened in recent observations and is no longer inconsistent with models.

Possible impacts of anomalous Arctic sea ice melting on summer atmosphere

Summary: The melting of Arctic sea ice may impact summer air temperature, precipitation, and extreme weather events in the mid-latitudes, exacerbating the effects of global warming on the summer atmosphere over Asia and North America.

Impact of Reduced Arctic Sea Ice on Northern Hemisphere Climate and Weather in Autumn and Winter

Svenya Chripko et al.

Summary: The study found that the decrease in Arctic sea ice leads to a significant temperature increase in the Arctic region, with noticeable temperature anomalies in the midlatitudes - warming in North America and Europe, and cooling in Central Asia. The warming in North America and Europe can be explained by changes in atmospheric circulation and advection of warmer oceanic air, while the sea ice-induced cooling in Central Asia is solely due to dynamical changes.

Amplified Waveguide Teleconnections Along the Polar Front Jet Favor Summer Temperature Extremes Over Northern Eurasia

Peiqiang Xu et al.

Summary: The study found that extreme temperatures in northern Eurasia during summer are generally associated with amplified wave activity along the polar front jet, while months with near-average temperatures tend to have attenuated wave activity. Waveguide teleconnections are particularly amplified during extremely hot and cold summer months over eastern Europe and western Russia.
