First-principles-based microkinetic rate equation theory for oxygen carrier reduction in chemical looping

Zhenshan Li

Summary: A theoretical scheme coupling elemental surface reaction mechanisms with bulk diffusion of lattice oxygen was proposed to model the reduction kinetics of oxygen carriers in chemical looping, using a first-principle-based microkinetic rate equation theory. The kinetic parameters were calculated directly using transition state theory and density functional theory, without the need for fitting with experimental data. The developed theory accurately predicted the reduction kinetics of a perovskite oxygen carrier under different conditions and analyzed the effects of surface reaction and bulk diffusion on the overall reaction rate.

Kinetic model development and Bayesian uncertainty quantification for the complete reduction of Fe-based oxygen carriers with CH4, CO, and H2 for chemical looping combustion

Anca Ostace et al.

Summary: Three kinetic models were developed and calibrated for the complete multi-step reduction of an Fe-based oxygen carrier particle with CH4, CO, and H-2. Bayesian model building and parameter estimation framework were applied to quantify parameter and model structure uncertainty simultaneously. The final kinetic models showed excellent agreement between model predictions and calibration data, as well as new data not used for calibration.

Modeling of propane dehydrogenation combined with chemical looping combustion of hydrogen in a fixed bed reactor

Junru Liu et al.

Summary: This study proposes, models, simulates, and optimizes a redox process that combines propane dehydrogenation with selective hydrogen combustion. The results show that the redox process can significantly increase propylene yield compared to the conventional process. The optimized operating conditions are a feed temperature of 973 K, a feed pressure of 0.1 MPa, an H2/C3H8 mole ratio of 0.15, and a mass fraction of 0.5 for the PDH catalyst.

Techno-Economic Analysis of a Hybrid Process for Propylene and Ammonia Production

Jian Qin et al.

Summary: This paper presents a hybrid process that utilizes hydrogen produced from propane dehydrogenation to simultaneously produce propylene and ammonia. By combining the endothermic propane dehydrogenation process with the exothermic ammonia synthesis process, the hybrid process achieves more efficient heat exchange capacity and lower utility consumption. In terms of economic cost, the hybrid process outperforms the standalone propylene production and methane-to-ammonia processes.

Microkinetic Modeling: A Tool for Rational Catalyst Design

Ali Hussain Motagamwala et al.

Summary: Microkinetic modeling is a useful tool for understanding surface kinetics in heterogeneous catalyst design. It helps identify key reaction intermediates and rate-determining elementary reactions, as well as ensuring thermodynamic consistency of the model and adjusting parameters for catalyst heterogeneity. The incorporation of Bronsted-Evans-Polanyi relations and scaling relations in microkinetic models has significant effects on catalytic performance and formation of volcano curves.
