Predicting Dinitrogen Activation by Five-Electron Boron-Centered Radicals

Jie Zeng et al.

Summary: Activating dinitrogen is challenging due to its high bond dissociation energy, but exploring main group compounds for this purpose is important. Boron-centered radicals show potential for dinitrogen activation, offering a new avenue for experimental chemists to explore. Spin-orbital analyses suggest that five-electron boron-centered radicals can mimic transition metals in interacting with dinitrogen.

Predicting Dinitrogen Activation by Carborane-Based Frustrated Lewis Pairs

Chenshu Dai et al.

Summary: This study discusses the challenge of activating dinitrogen (N-2) under mild conditions and introduces the potential of using carborane derivatives for N-2 activation. Through theoretical calculations, it is found that carborane-based frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) have low reaction barriers and high exothermicity for N-2 activation, indicating the potential for metal-free N2 activation under mild conditions.

Predicting dinitrogen activation by borenium and borinium cations

Chenshu Dai et al.

Summary: In this study, a frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) combining carbene and borenium cations was investigated for N-2 activation. Two FLPs, closed form FLP and open form FLP, were found to activate N-2 in a thermodynamically and kinetically favorable manner. Aromaticity was also found to play an important role in stabilizing the products.

CO-Induced Dinitrogen Fixation and Cleavage Mediated by Boron

Guohai Deng et al.

Summary: Boron atoms react with carbon monoxide and dinitrogen to form NNBCO complexes in solid neon or nitrogen matrices, which rearrange to ε(2)-N-2BCO isomers upon visible light excitation. These isomers further isomerize to NBNCO and B(NCO)2 molecules under UV light irradiation, with complete cleavage of the N-N bond. The geometries, energies, and vibrational spectra of the molecules are calculated using quantum chemical methods, while the electronic structures are analyzed with charge- and energy-partitioning methods.

Dinitrogen complexation and reduction at low-valent calcium

B. Roesch et al.

Summary: The attempted preparation of low-valent Ca-I complexes in the form of LCa-CaL under dinitrogen atmosphere led to the isolation of LCa(N-2)CaL, which acts as a synthon for the target LCa-CaL.The N-2(2-) anion in this complex reacted as a potent two-electron donor and could be protonated to diazene. The role of Ca d orbitals in N-2 activation is also discussed.

Predicting Dinitrogen Activation via Transition-Metal-Involved [4+2] Cycloaddition Reaction

Shicheng Dong et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that dinitrogen can be activated using a transition-metal-involved [4+2] Diels-Alder cycloaddition reaction without the need for an additional reductant. Further analysis shows that 1-metalla-1,3-dienes selected from a series of transition metal complexes exhibit low activation energy and favorable thermodynamic conditions for dinitrogen activation.

Systematic Design of a Frustrated Lewis Pair Containing Methyleneborane and Carbene for Dinitrogen Activation

Alvi Muhammad Rouf et al.

Summary: Recent research has made limited progress in metal-free N-2 activation using boron species such as borylene, methyleneborane, borole, and borane. Through density functional theory calculations, a frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) containing methyleneborane and carbene was studied for N-2 activation, with aromaticity playing a crucial role in product stabilization. This study suggests the potential of FLP for N-2 activation and functionalization in the development of metal-free chemistry.

Summary: The cleavage of the triple bond of N-2 by fluoroborylene was successfully achieved in a low-temperature N-2 matrix, resulting in the formation of novel species characterized by their matrix infrared spectra and quantum-chemical calculations.
