Receiver operating characteristic curve: overview and practical use for clinicians

Francis Sahngun Nahm

Summary: The ROC curve is a vital tool for evaluating diagnostic performance, comparing multiple tests, and selecting optimal cut-off values. Understanding the core concepts of ROC curve analysis is essential for the correct use and interpretation of the ROC curve.

Direction and Magnitude of Change in Plateau From Peak Pressure During Inspiratory Holds Can Identify the Degree of Spontaneous Effort and Elastic Workload in Ventilated Patients

Miyako Kyogoku et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the use of measures of airway pressure during inspiratory holds for patients with spontaneous respiratory effort during mechanical ventilation. It found that the magnitude of plateau minus peak pressure during an inspiratory hold is correlated with the degree of inspiratory effort, particularly for those with high elastic work. This may be useful in identifying patients with excessively high effort or high driving pressure.

Effect of a Sedation and Ventilator Liberation Protocol vs Usual Care on Duration of Invasive Mechanical Ventilation in Pediatric Intensive Care Units A Randomized Clinical Trial

Bronagh Blackwood et al.

Summary: This study found that among infants and children anticipated to require prolonged mechanical ventilation, a sedation and ventilator liberation protocol intervention resulted in a statistically significant reduction in time to first successful extubation. However, the clinical importance of the effect size remains uncertain.
