Acid phosphatase activity in freshwater ecosystems of western Cuba and its relationship with water quality

Jeny Adina Larrea-Murrell et al.

Summary: Enzyme activity plays an important role in aquatic ecosystems and is sensitive to changes in pH, temperature, and nutrient concentration. This study investigated acid phosphatase activity (AcPA) in the Almendares and San Juan rivers in western Cuba and its relationship with physicochemical and microbiological indicators. The results showed spatiotemporal variability in enzymatic activity in both ecosystems. In the polluted Almendares River, AcPA was positively correlated with nitrate concentration and chemical oxygen demand (COD), while in the slightly contaminated San Juan River, AcPA correlated negatively with pH and nutrient pollution index (NPI) and positively with concentrations of total heterotrophs, Escherichia coli, chlorophyll a, and N:P ratio.

Multivariate statistics and entropy theory for irrigation water quality and entropy-weighted index development in a subtropical urban river, Bangladesh

Md Abu Bakar Siddique et al.

Summary: This study developed a combination of IWQIs and EWQIs for evaluating surface water quality in a polluted subtropical urban river, utilizing statistical weights and information entropy analysis to identify key pollutants and variables affecting water quality. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of IWQIs and EWQIs in assessing water quality status and providing a scientific basis for sustainable water management.

Spatiotemporal variations, health risks, pollution status and possible sources of dissolved trace metal(loid)s in the Karasu River, Turkey

Memet Varol et al.

Summary: The study found that overall the levels of dissolved trace metals in the Karasu River mostly met drinking water standards, indicating the water quality is suitable for consumption. Seasonal variations and different sources contributed to the increase in TM concentrations. The risk levels for water ingestion and dermal contact for residents were low, but the intake risk for children exceeded the safe level.

A framework for assessing the adequacy of Water Quality Index - Quantifying parameter sensitivity and uncertainties in missing values distribution

Hui Ying Pak et al.

Summary: This study introduced an adjusted form of Water Quality Index (WQI) to handle missing values and developed a Sub-WQI to address local water quality conditions. WQI results from different parameter optimisation methods were compared, and a new procedure was developed to evaluate the adequacy of WQI based on parameter sensitivity and uncertainties associated with missing values. The study also optimized the number of observations needed for robust WQI development and applied the framework to the Johor River Basin in Malaysia, showing the importance of certain parameters in impacting water quality.

Preliminary assessment of heavy metals in surface water and sediment in Nakuvadra-Rakiraki River, Fiji using indexical and chemometric approaches

Satendra Kumar et al.

Summary: The study analyzed sediment and water samples from the Nakuvadra-Rakiraki River in Fiji, identifying high concentrations of heavy metals in sediment and pollution by lead, manganese, and copper. Sources of heavy metals in the sediment were identified as point, nonpoint, and lithological, while sources in water were geogenic and human-induced. The study provides valuable information for environmental management and pollution assessment in rivers globally.

Hong-Giang Hoang et al.

Summary: This study assessed the human health risks caused by heavy metal contamination in the surface water of the Houjing River in southern Taiwan. The results showed severe synergistic contamination of heavy metals with copper, nickel, and lead contributing the most, and copper posing the highest non-carcinogenic risk. Additionally, the cumulative risks from fish ingestion were significantly higher than those from swimming scenarios.

Application of Multivariate Statistical Techniques and Water Quality Index for the Assessment of Water Quality and Apportionment of Pollution Sources in the Yeongsan River, South Korea

Md Mamun et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the water quality of the Yeongsan River using multivariate statistical techniques and water quality index values. The river was found to be impacted by factors such as summer monsoon and construction of weirs, with algal growth being more regulated by total phosphorus than total nitrogen after weir construction. Spatially discriminating parameters were identified using discriminant analysis, while trends in water quality parameters were assessed through Mann-Kendall test. The study concluded that sewage treatment plants, agricultural activities, and livestock farming were major factors impacting the river's water quality.
