Uptake and translocation of nano/microplastics by rice seedlings: Evidence from a hydroponic experiment

Yingying Liu et al.

Summary: The study found that both 80 nm and 1 μm PS microspheres were detected in the roots, stems, and leaves of rice seedlings, mainly aggregating on cell walls and in the intercellular regions. This suggests that rice seedlings can accumulate nano/microplastics in their roots and translocate them to aboveground tissues, potentially transferring them to higher trophic levels through the food chain.

Microplastics from shoe sole fragments cause oxidative stress in a plant (Vigna radiata) and impair soil environment

Tae-Yang Lee et al.

Summary: Shoe sole fragments can have adverse effects on plants and soil environment. Different types of shoe sole fragments directly affect plant growth and photosynthesis. Therefore, it is necessary to develop shoe soles with less harmful environmental effects.

Elucidating the impact of goethite-modified biochar on arsenic mobility, bioaccumulation in paddy rice (Oryza sativa L.) along with soil enzyme activities

Muhammad Ibrahim et al.

Summary: This research investigated the use of goethite-modified biochar (GMBC) in immobilizing arsenic in paddy soil and reducing its accumulation in rice grains. The results showed that GMBC supplementation significantly improved rice plant biomass and reduced arsenic content in rice grains. The application of GMBC also enhanced soil enzyme activity, bacterial abundance, and decreased arsenic mobility in the soil.

Sources, migration, accumulation and influence of microplastics in terrestrial plant communities

Zhe-fu Yu et al.

Summary: Microplastics pollution has become a global environmental concern due to the extensive use and improper disposal of plastics. Research is mainly focused on individual plants rather than plant communities, and there is a need for more comprehensive studies on the effects of microplastics on different plant communities in high-pressure areas to assess the ecological risks more thoroughly.

Interactions and effects of microplastics with heavy metals in aquatic and terrestrial environments

Noreen Khalid et al.

Summary: Contamination of waters and soils with microplastics (MPs) is a global environmental issue, posing a threat to ecosystems and organism health; The co-occurrence of MPs with heavy metals may enhance the transfer of toxic metals in the food chain; Understanding the interactions of MPs with heavy metals in different ecosystems is crucial for assessing their ecotoxic effects.

Microplastics and freshwater microalgae: what do we know so far?

Barbara Rani-Borges et al.

Summary: This study analyzed 20 scientific articles on the toxic effects of microplastics on freshwater microalgae. The results indicate that factors such as shape, size, concentration, and duration of exposure have significant effects on the impact of microplastics. Research gaps and future research priorities were identified in this study.

Linking effects of microplastics to ecological impacts in marine environments

Noreen Khalid et al.

Summary: Efforts to determine the ecological impacts of microplastic pollutants have increased due to plastic contamination of the environment. There is a big knowledge gap in assessing the toxicological effects of microplastics, and ecological risk assessment has become more challenging. Research on the ecology of microplastics needs to be expanded to better understand their impacts on the environment.

Elucidating the distinct interactive impact of cadmium and nickel on growth, photosynthesis, metal-homeostasis, and yield responses of mung bean (Vigna radiata L.) varieties

Muhammad Aqeel et al.

Summary: This study assessed the toxicity of heavy metals cadmium and nickel on mung bean plants, revealing significant differences in morpho-physiological attributes between varieties, with V-2 showing sensitivity to cadmium and nickel. Metal treatments led to reduced plant growth and suppressed gas exchange characteristics, with cadmium treatments having more adverse effects on mung bean plants.
