Microplastics degradation through hydrothermal liquefaction of wastewater treatment sludge

Rupa Chand et al.

Summary: The presence of microplastics (MPs) in wastewater treatment plant sludge is a hindrance to sustainability efforts. However, a study has shown that hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) can effectively reduce the amount of MPs in sludge, leaving the residual products less polluted. The HTL process also led to a change in polymer composition, with the resulting byproducts and residuals being more suitable for sustainability efforts.

Occurrence of microplastics in commercial marine dried fish in Asian countries

Nathangi Piyawardhana et al.

Summary: A study found a high presence of microplastics in 14 different marine dried fish products from seven Asian countries, with fibers making up around 80% of the total microplastics. The major plastic polymers identified included polyethylene, PET, polystyrene, PVC, and polypropylene. Consumption of whole marine dried fish products may contribute to human ingestion of microplastics, especially in Asian countries, potentially posing health risks. Further research is needed to identify smaller sized microplastics and nanoplastics and their potential health impacts.

Distribution and environmental risk assessment of microplastics in continental shelf sediments in the southern East China Sea: A high-spatial-resolution survey

Zhaozhao Li et al.

Summary: This study provides a high-spatial-resolution analysis on the distributions, characteristics, and environmental risks of microplastics in the southern East China Sea. The results show that microplastics are commonly found in surface sediments, with higher concentrations near urban centers. The dominant types of microplastics are polyethylene and polyethylene terephthalate, mainly in the form of fibers and fragments, and have a size of 0.1-0.5 mm. The study highlights the complex interactions among physical, biological, and topographic factors that control the distribution and environmental risks of microplastics in coastal sediments.

Weiyi Liu et al.

Summary: This study reviewed the abundance and removal of microplastics in 38 wastewater treatment plants worldwide and found different characteristics of microplastics in different treatment technologies. The research revealed that filter-based treatment technologies showed the best removal efficiency for microplastics, and different types and sizes of microplastics were removed in different ways in various treatment processes.

Sources, migration, accumulation and influence of microplastics in terrestrial plant communities

Zhe-fu Yu et al.

Summary: Microplastics pollution has become a global environmental concern due to the extensive use and improper disposal of plastics. Research is mainly focused on individual plants rather than plant communities, and there is a need for more comprehensive studies on the effects of microplastics on different plant communities in high-pressure areas to assess the ecological risks more thoroughly.

Scientific studies on microplastics pollution in Iran: An in-depth review of the published articles

Nastaran Razeghi et al.

Summary: Microplastics pollution in Iran's ecosystems is mainly studied in aquatic environments, particularly in the Persian Gulf and the Oman Sea. Most studies focus on the presence of microplastics in marine organisms such as fish, as well as in commercial salt and bottled mineral water brands in Iran. Further research is needed, especially in terrestrial and freshwater compartments, to better understand the extent of microplastics pollution.

Microplastic contamination in a conventional wastewater treatment plant in Thailand

Katekanya Tadsuwan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the microplastic pollution in an urban wastewater treatment plant in Thailand, finding that the major types of MPs in the WWTP were polyester fibres, followed by polypropylene, polyethylene, silicone polymer and polystyrene. The study highlights the potential risk of MPs from dried sewage sludge in agricultural soil.

The sorption of persistent organic pollutants in microplastics from the coastal environment

Lin-Chi Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that microplastic pellets collected from sandy beaches around Taiwan contained various organic pollutants, with high concentrations of PCDD/Fs, PBDD/Fs, PBDEs, and other POPs. These pollutants were mainly adsorbed into the inner part of microplastic pellets, resulting in a high ratio of total concentrations to surficial concentrations.

Microplastics in zooplankton in the eastern Arabian Sea: The threats they pose to fish and corals favoured by coastal currents

C. P. Rashid et al.

Summary: The baseline study of Microplastics in zooplankton along India's west coast revealed that zooplankton in all six zones accumulated MPs pellets, fibres, films, and fragments, with fish larvae having the highest average retention of MPs and copepods the lowest. Raman Spectra confirmed the presence of various types of microplastics in the zooplankton, with the study showing higher levels compared to densely populated areas in the world, indicating potential impacts on fish and corals.

Microplastic sampling techniques in freshwaters and sediments: a review

Nastaran Razeghi et al.

Summary: Common methods and tools for sampling microplastics in freshwater ecosystems include using Manta trawls for surface water and shovel, trowel, spade, scoop, and spatula for sediments, with Van Veen grab commonly used for deep sediment sampling. There is a need to develop optimal methods to reduce identification time and effort, and to detect smaller-sized plastic particles.

A review on the characteristics of microplastics in wastewater treatment plants: A source for toxic chemicals

Amir Hossein Hamidian et al.

Summary: Wastewater treatment plants are a significant source of microplastics discharged into the environment, with their characteristics in different environmental matrices still largely unknown. Most microplastics in water samples are composed of PET, PS, PP, and PE, with a significant proportion being removed during primary and secondary treatment stages, and MBR being the most efficient tertiary treatment technology. The majority of microplastics removed during wastewater treatment end up in sewage sludge and are released into the environment via sludge applications.

Can incineration completely eliminate plastic wastes? An investigation of microplastics and heavy metals in the bottom ash and fly ash from an incineration plant

Maocai Shen et al.

Summary: Investigation of microplastics and heavy metals in the fly ash, bottom ash and soil samples from a waste incinerate plant revealed the presence of high abundance of microplastics, with heavy metals adsorbed on their surfaces. The column test showed that these pollutants can be significantly dissolved out under external precipitation, leading to potential environmental impacts. This study provides a theoretical basis for further research on the proper treatment of waste ash and its environmental behavior.
