Summary: This study updates the annual emission inventory of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and furans (PCDD/Fs) and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (dl-PCBs) in India from the open burning of municipal solid waste. By generating nation-specific emission factors and conducting simulated combustion experiments, the study reveals the impact of environmental factors and unique waste characteristics and disposal methods in Indian cities on emissions. The results provide valuable insights for environmental management and underscore the importance of considering local conditions in emission calculations.

Xihao Du et al.

Summary: The study conducted a randomized, crossover trial among healthy young students in Shanghai, China to investigate the biological mechanism of adverse health outcomes related to traffic-related air pollution (TRAP). The multi-omics analysis showed that exposure to TRAP is associated with changes in genome-wide transcription, protein, and metabolite profiles, affecting pathways such as inflammation, oxidative stress, and hormone signaling. The study demonstrated novel pathways activated in response to TRAP exposure, providing evidence of global molecular changes at the multi-omics level.

Po-Hsuan Yen et al.

Summary: The fingerprints and source origins of marine PM2.5 at two background islands in the South China Sea were clustered and analyzed. It was found that PM2.5 at the Dongsha Islands was highly influenced by long-range transport of Asian continental outflows, while particulate air quality at the Nansha Islands was mainly governed by clean air parcels blown from the SCS.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of high-intensity interval exercise (HIIE) performed in traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) on physiological responses. The results demonstrated that exercising in a polluted environment could lead to imbalanced inflammatory responses, abnormal energy metabolism, and impaired blood pressure decrease. Conversely, exercising in a filtered air environment improved inflammatory balance and energy metabolism.

S. Ajay et al.

Summary: India's management of municipal solid wastes poses great challenges, with traditional methods such as open dumpyards and landfills leading to incidents of fire breakouts. This study compared the emissions of harmful substances from fire breakouts at waste dumpyards and street burning in Indian cities, and evaluated the health risks to the population. The findings suggest moderate to low risk of cancer or cancer-linked illnesses to exposed individuals.

Summary: China's unprecedented lockdown in early 2020 provided a natural experiment to study the response of atmospheric pollution to emission reduction. Summary: The study investigated the spatial patterns of disease burden caused by toxic metals in PM2.5 across over 60 cities in China. It found that Cr(VI) and As were the most polluted metals, exceeding the recommended annual values in China's National Ambient Air Quality Standard. The potential years of life lost (PYLL) for each death for lung cancer was 19.8 +/- 4.5 years, followed by COPD and pneumonia. The concentration levels and PYLL showed significant spatial variability, with cities having well-developed metal-related industries and coal-powered industrial sectors being more affected.
